ROCHESTER – The City of Rochester is taking steps to make roads safer and reduce traffic deaths.
It launched its Vision Zero initiative in 2024 to tackle the high rate of deadly crashes, the highest among midsize cities in upstate New York.
City Council Member Mitch Gruber said distracted drivers and bad driving habits contribute to the problem.
“It is demonstrably more dangerous to drive, walk, bike, or ride the bus in Rochester than it is in any other city in upstate New York,” Gruber said.
Vision Zero has already secured over $33 million in grants for street safety improvements.
New crosswalks and bike lanes have been added, and raised medians for pedestrians are in place at locations like State and Jay Streets.
Mayor Malik Evans emphasized the importance of safety for pedestrians.
“They or their families should not have to think about walking being dangerous or risky,” said Evans.
Luis Burgos, a community advisory board member, highlighted the need for safer streets, especially for children walking to school.
“Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to see very irresponsible activity on the street in terms of speeding,” Burgos said.
This year, the city plans to lower the speed limit to 25 miles per hour.
“A safe city is one where everyone, whether walking a bike, riding the bus or using a wheelchair, can move without fear,” said Evans.
Rochester plans to hold community sessions starting in the spring to gather public input. The city is also conducting a study on the costs and needs for additional snow and ice removal from sidewalks, trails and bus stops.
