BRISTOLVILLE — Bristol’s basketball program is known for its “bedlam” defense, a tradition of creating chaos defensively and leading to points on the other end.
While the Panthers didn’t press as often as they like to on Tuesday, both defenses found a way to disrupt the flow of the game. The bedlam was a sword that cut both ways, however, with the Panthers and Grand Valley creating chaos for each other at every turn.
It took until the final three minutes for either team to find some sort of rhythm on offense, which allowed the Mustangs to pull away late in a 48-38 victory.
“Our guys stuck with it,” Grand Valley coach Justin Turk said. “We’ve got a lot of leaders. We knew it was going to be a grind-out game, so just staying with what we do would be important. We knew we’d either start making shots or be aggressive around the hoop. We just wanted to make sure that we kept it close until we were ready to explode.”
That explosion came late in the fourth after a couple quick baskets by the Mustangs – including a huge 3-pointer by Carter Turk – forced the Panthers to abandon their self-described “junk” defense and switch to man.
Both of Grand Valley’s leading scorers, Solomon Schultz (13 points) and Carter Turk (12), each scored at least half of their points in the final quarter. Payton Plizga tacked on 11 for the Mustangs.
While no coach wants their team to be in a shooting slump for most of a game, Turk knew that as long as their defense held strong, they’d have a chance.
“That’s the thing, with the way we play, no matter if we have an off night, we know our defense wins games,” Turk said. “We held Bristol to 38 points on their home court, which is pretty impressive. We live and die on the defensive end, and we usually get enough offense when we need it.”
Sophomore Kaleb Otey led the way for Bristol with 11 points. Logan Briggs added 10.
“Never happy with a loss, but we gave effort and energy today, and I can live with that,” Panthers coach Jeff Thompson said. “It was a one-point game going into the fourth quarter. … They forced us out of (our junk defense) a little bit, because we got down and had to go in a little bit of man. Then those guys were able to take over the game a little bit, and we missed a few shots.
“I can’t fault my kids’ energy level and effort tonight. If we keep playing like this the way we did against a very good team like Grand Valley, we’re going to be fine for the rest of the season.”
Bristol hits the road to take on Lordstown on Friday, while Grand Valley makes the trek up to Fairport Harbor to face the Skippers for a Tuesday contest.
