There aren’t many music fans who talk about — or even remember — David Forman in 2026.
And that’s definitely a shame, since Foreman is a talented singer-songwriter who managed to turn heads with his self-titled 1976 debut, which was full of thoughtful, expertly produced blue-eyed soul and pop numbers. (The debut isn’t easy to find, but we stumbled across a nice copy on YouTube by searching for “David Forman 1976.”)
The album was well-received by critics, leading Rolling Stone magazine to reportedly champion Forman as a songwriter on the same lofty level as Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon and Tom Waits.
High praise indeed, right? So, what happened?
Forman would record a second album — dubbed “Who You Been Talking To” — for Arista Records in 1977. And he most definitely was working with a dream team in the studio, with producer Jack Nitzsche (Neil Young, Rolling Stones) at the helm and a group of A-list L.A. session players that included Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner, David Lindley, Fred Tackett, Tim Drummond and Flaco Jimenez.
But, as the story goes, legendary label exec Clive Davis didn’t hear a single in the mix and so the album was never released.
Until now.
After nearly a half century living in “long lost album” land, “Who You Been Talking To” is finally set to see the light of day. The record is being released by the High Moon Records label on Jan. 23.
