Kirk Herbstreit once played the quarterback position at Ohio State, and after decades of working as an ESPN college football analyst, he is the ideal person to break down someone like Carson Beck.
Beck is a familiar, polarizing name in SEC circles, having starred at Georgia before transferring to Miami for the 2025 season. And in his one season at UM, all he’s done is lead the Hurricanes to the precipice of a national championship. Beck and the Canes will take on top-seeded Indiana on Monday night in their home stadium, playing for everything, which is something Beck was familiar with during his early years at Georgia.
He wasn’t the starter during the Bulldogs’ back-to-back national title runs in 2021 and 2022, but he was present for it all, and he’s the starter now for the Miami program Beck is trying to lead back to the top. Beck has thrown for 3,581 yards this season with 29 touchdown passes but also 11 interceptions, with still one game to go, and his late heroics helped the Hurricanes past Ole Miss in the semifinals on Jan. 8.
“When you look at Beck’s career, at times he’s been two different people,” Herbstreit said. “There’s times he gets into trouble when he has to reset his feet. He’s willing to put the ball into coverage. This is what we got to watch. The tight window.”
Herbstreit praised Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson for “simplifying things” for Beck since the Canes’ overtime loss to SMU on Nov. 1. That was also Miami’s last loss, as Beck has led the Hurricanes all the way to mid-January and a Monday night championship matchup opposite Indiana Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
“Physically, he’s as gifted as any quarterback playing college football,” Herbstreit said. “He believes in himself. He thinks he can make this throw, and like a lot of quarterbacks he gets himself into trouble throwing off that back foot. You want him to reset his feet, and you want him to be put in position.”

“But this guy, it’s one or the other. If he’s on point (Monday night), Miami has a great shot,” Herbstreit said.
That was Herbstreit’s complete Beck breakdown on ESPN’s College GameDay.
Now, it was time for Beck to show the country what he could do on the biggest stage possible, far away from Athens.
