ROCHESTER – Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time to reflect on the legacy of the civil rights leader and his fight against discrimination.

Debra Brooks-Campbell shared that the day means everything to her because of King’s reach and impact. Her husband, originally from Jamaica, often shares stories of Dr. King from his country.

“He tells everybody,” she said. “You would think that he was born here, besides his accent.”

TJ Betts mentioned that despite setbacks and obstacles in the Black community, Martin Luther King Jr. Day serves as a reminder to unite and be one.

“I think Martin Luther King Day is a reminder to black people that our fight is never gonna end, that we still have to continue to push for our rights, continue to push for the stuff that we need to get through,” Betts said.

Hooks-Campbell expressed the importance of the day for the younger generation.

“It’s so important because you have this younger generation, and they need to know, and we need to know what people have done for us — all of us,” Hooks-Campbell said. “No matter what color you are, nationality, King represented everybody. And I thank God for that.”

The first official observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day took place nearly 40 years ago on Jan. 20, 1986.
