Rams 20, Bears 17: The End (But Also, Maybe the Beginning) ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

There simply wasn’t enough magic left for the Chicago Bears to pull off one final miraculous win. But it wasn’t like there weren’t opportunities to do so.

FINAL (IN OVERTIME): Los Angeles Rams 20, Chicago Bears 17 (ESPN BOX SCORE)

Thoughts after a gut-wrenching, soul-snatching Bears loss

There is so much I want to dissect from this game. And we’ve got an entire offseason to pick apart what happened. However, I want to start this section with a positive thought. Chicago’s football team established itself as a force to be reckon with this season. Ben Johnson is a heckuva coach. Caleb Williams is a special talent (this throw to send it into OT was insane) at quarterback. And they just had the kind of season that should serve as a foundation for even better things in the future — and in Year 1 of the partnership, no less. At the end of the day, it feels good to feel something about the Bears. More on that tomorrow. Don’t get me wrong, that loss will sting. It should. That one was there for the taking. However, this season not ending with a Super Bowl win doesn’t make it a failure.

CHICAGO BEARS INSTANT GRADES: THE MAGIC FINALLY RUNS OUT

Kudos to Dennis Allen for cooking up his best game plan of the year. And in doing so, the defense limited a high-powered Rams offense to just 20 points. Chicago’s defense came up with four sacks of Matthew Stafford, six tackles-for-loss, and a dozen plays that made you jump off your couch and pump your fist. No, that group didn’t get the big interception or fumble recovery it needed to turn the game on its head. But dang, they came close on several occasions. On the offensive side of the ball, that game will be remembered for missed opportunities. Rome Odunze’s dropped pass near the goal line on the opening possession. Multiple failed fourth-down conversion opportunities. A bunch of little things happened to add up to this loss. So it’s not as if it was jut one thing. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images

Game highlights

Some insane catches and stops by the defense caught my eye in the NFC Divisional playoff game between Chicago and Los Angeles:

Three Bears

Let’s talk about key players from this game…

Caleb Williams — The box score will not be kind to Chicago’s QB1. And I’m not sure the Pro Football Focus grades will look good either. Williams completed 23 of 42 passes for 257 yards. He threw two touchdowns, but the three interceptions were painful to watch. They didn’t all result in points for the Rams. But the last one did. And that one will be remembered for a while. If you’re looking for a silver lining, it’s this: The best quarterbacks use a moment like that to fuel a comeback story. I look forward to seeing what Caleb is made of when next season kicks off.

Jaquan Brisker — This is the type of game that the Penn State product is capable of having. Brisker had a team-high 14 tackles (including 8 solo) to go with two passes defended, a sack, a tackle-for-loss, and a quarterback hit. He was making plays at the line of scrimmage, in the backfield, and in coverage. If that is the last time we see Brisker in a Bears uniform, at least we know he left it all on the Soldier Field playing surface.

Ben Johnson — There will be several moments that Chicago’s head coach might want back from that game. But I hope that the shortcomings that came after his decisions to roll the dice don’t lead him to change his style and become unnecessarily conservative in the future. Because while playing with fire is a dangerous game, it is an entertaining one to watch. Plus, it worked more often than not, so I see no reason to go hard in the other direction just because it didn’t go your way tonight. Fortune favors he bold. Don’t ever forget that.
