Former Indian cricketer and the head of Centre of Excellence (CoE) VVS Laxman will serve as India cricket team‘s head coach for the series against Zimbabwe and the Asian Games 2026. This development comes a day after the BCCI unveiled the squad for the three-match series against ZIM which begins later this month. As per reports, Laxman will take over the reins from Gautam Gambhir for the abovementioned assignments, and will be assisted by a couple of other new faces as well.
Laxman to be India’s head coach for ZIM series, Asian Games
As per the Times of India, VVS Laxman will go as Team India’s head coach for the tours to Zimbabwe and the Asian Games in Japan. The decision to split the coaching duties between Gautam Gambhir and the head of the CoE is reportedly due to India’s packed international calendar, and the overlap between the Asian Games and the series against West Indies. Hrishikesh Kantikar will be the batting coach and Sunil Joshi will serve as the bowling coach for the two assignments. Additionally, the report states that the trio could also stay on as coaches for the white-ball series against Bangladesh as well.
@bcci updateDue to India's packed calendar, CoE head VVS Laxman will go as Head Coach to India's tours of Zimbabwe & Asian Games in Japan. Gautam Gambhir and Laxman will thus divide the coaching duties as The Asian Games overlap with the early part of WI' tour of India
— Gaurav Gupta (@toi_gauravG) July 7, 2026While Gautam Gambhir led India to the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026, he hasn’t had a great run as head coach in T20Is recently. India lost their first-ever series to Ireland as they were whitewashed 0-2 in the two-match series. Following that, the Men in Blue were beaten by England in the ENG vs IND 2nd T20I in Manchester after the first game in Durham was abandoned mid-way due to rain.
The three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe will commence from July 23 onwards, just days after the ODI series against England concludes. With Gambhir present in England with the current Indian setup for the tour, the decision to allow Laxman to take over as the head coach for the series against ZIM makes complete sense. The Asian Games 2026 is all set to commence from September 19 and will go on till October 4. This tournament will overlap with the West Indies tour of India, which will see the Men in Maroon play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is between September 27 to October 17.
