News by : (Parade) -

"High amounts of added sugar can lead to unplanned weight gain and health issues," explains Courtney Pelitera, MS, RD, CNSC, a registered dietitian at Live It Up. "Typical cereals are high in added sugar."

"Added sugars can leave you feeling hungry two hours later due to blood sugar crashes," says Shelley Balls, MDA, RDN, LDN, a registered dietitian and nutritionist for Flawless Bloom.

Do the ingredients look familiar? Can you pronounce them? Is there seemingly a million of them? Your answers to these questions can help you decide which cereal to choose. "Simpler, recognizable ingredients usually mean less processing and better overall nutritional quality," explains Dr. Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD, a registered dietitian and the fitness and nutrition advisor at Garage Gym Reviews.

Lower sugar options

Want to bypass the office candy jar on your way to your desk at 8:55 a.m.? Aim to get some fiber in your cereal in the morning. "Look for at least 3 to 4 grams of fiber per serving so that your breakfast benefits your digestive health and makes you feel full for longer," Dr. Mohr advises.

Pack in the protein

Sugar gets the lion's share of attention with cereals, but they can contain sneaky high amounts of sodium. "Choose cereals that contain less than 150 milligrams per serving," Balls says. "Excess sodium intake can cause fluid buildup and increase the risk of heart events." Regular excessive sodium intake is a major risk factor for high blood pressure.

Go nuts

Consider taste

Honestly, none of the above matters if your taste buds don't like the cereal. "We have come such a long way from 'bran flavored sticks' as I used to call them when I was a kid," Pelitera dishes. "We have some really great-tasting options that are still healthy."

Seven Sunday

"Seven Sundays does a great job of providing fiber, protein and healthy fats in their cereals while keeping a low added-sugar content," Pelitera states. "The combination of these things provides a great way to satisfy hunger for a long day, reduce high spikes in blood sugar and subsequent crashes, help reduce cholesterol for heart health and provide support for gut health and digestion."

"Healthy fats from nuts or seeds are beneficial for heart health and help with satiety," Dr. Mohr adds.

Speaking of variety, Seven Sundays offers many flavors, and dietitians are split on their favorite. They include:

Maple Walnut. Dr. Mohr loves that this flavor combines oats, nuts and seeds with "just enough sweetness without too many added sugars. The nuts add healthy fats, and the overall macronutrient profile leans toward more sustained energy rather than a sugar rush."Real Cocoa Sunflower Cereal. A self-proclaimed chocoholic, Pelitera immediately said this one is her favorite. "I like to add this on top of my morning yogurt for a nice crunch," Pelitera says.Wild & Free Muesli, Blueberry Chia Buckwheat. Balls is a big fan of the nutrition in this one. "It contains 8 grams of protein, 6 grams of dietary fiber, and it contains only 4 grams of added sugars and 5 grams of sodium," Balls reports.

If Seven Sundays isn't available near you or isn't your cup of tea, you have other healthy cereal options. Registered dietitians also suggest:

Nature’s Path. Balls says that Nature's Path makes a Smart Bran variety with a whopping 17 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein per serving. "Although I wish this option provided more protein, you can always pair it with a protein-rich side, such as a nut butter or a boiled egg," she says.Kashi GoLean. Dr. Mohr and Pelitera both mentioned Kashi GoLean. "Kashi GoLean is a brand I appreciate because it has more whole grains and a higher protein content, which helps with fullness and a higher fiber intake," D.r Mohr says.Cascaidian Farms Cereals. "This brand makes cereals that are similar to the typical cereal brands but are lower in sugar and higher in fiber," Pelitera says.
