The Chicago surgeon accused of murdering his ex-wife and her dentist husband in their Ohio home was indicted by a grand jury Friday.
The jury handed down a five-count indictment against Michael McKee, including four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary.
The 39-year-old resident of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood is facing a maximum term of life in prison without parole if convicted.
Married couple Spencer and Monique Tepe were found dead in late December after friends and colleagues grew worried about them and placed several phone calls to police.
At least four calls were placed to police about the Tepes starting around 9 a.m. on December 30, authorities said. The first call was from the owner of Spencer’s dental practice, who told the operator that he did not come to work and he would usually check in before missing a day and is never late.
An hour later, 911 received another call about the Tepes from an unidentified man who was outside their home and said he could hear their kids inside but couldn’t get in. Then, another friend reported to authorities they saw a body inside the house before breaking down into sobs.
Three 9-millimeter casings were found inside the home, according to the police report.
No motive for the killing has been revealed so far by police.
McKee remains in jail in Winnebago County as he awaits extradition to Franklin County in Ohio.
McKee appeared in court Monday in Illinois and the public defender representing him said he plans to plead not guilty.
His indictment comes two days after police say they found the murder weapon that they say McKee held onto after returning to Chicago.
