DENVER, Colo. — The Buffalo Bills are set to face the Denver Broncos in an AFC playoff game this weekend. Fans traveling from Western New York may experience some challenges due to Denver’s high altitude.
Denver’s elevation is about 5,000 feet above sea level, which means the air contains less oxygen than what people are accustomed to in Western New York. This could affect both fans and players.
“As your body is acclimating, it does not have as much oxygen moving around, you’re going to feel some fatigue. Your heart rate’s gonna speed up, you’re gonna breathe a little bit faster, your muscles just won’t work like they did. So, climbing up to the bleachers to get to your seat is going to take a little bit more time,” said Dr. Lorinda Parks.
“The headache is the thing that you’re probably gonna notice the most. Usually, it’s a dull, sort of pounding headache, and it builds over time. Some Tylenol will work fine for that, and remembering to hydrate yourself well, really hydrating well, drinking plenty of water is gonna work,” she added.
Dr. Parks mentioned that it takes about 12 days for someone to fully acclimate to higher altitudes. During the game, players might be seen wearing oxygen masks on the sidelines.
