Johnson, Pritzker vow to take Trump admin to court over threat of funding loss ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker vowed to fight the Trump administration in court after President Donald Trump said he’s going to cut off all funding to sanctuary cities starting Feb. 1.

“We have put forth litigation to beat back against this president’s unhealthy behavior, and I’m confident that as the courts have done before, ruled in our favor that he’s working outside of the Constitution,” Johnson told reporters Wednesday.

Illinois and Chicago both have sanctuary policies that limit local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with federal immigration operations. The president blasted sanctuary jurisdictions during a speech at the Detroit Economic Club Tuesday.

“They do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens. And it breeds fraud, crime and all of the other problems that come. We are not making any payments to anybody that supports sanctuary cities,” Trump said.

When reporters asked Trump exactly which kind of funding would be gone by the end of the month, he played coy, saying “you’ll see” and “it’ll be significant.”

Chicago spends roughly a billion dollars in federal funds each year, according to the mayor’s office. Federal funding makes up about 77% of the city’s grant money. It goes toward public safety, aviation and other city services.

“With all of the funding cuts that this administration has taken away from us, it has been probably the most challenging year of my governorship because we can’t replace the federal funding. It’s too large,” Pritzker said Wednesday in Pontiac.

Across Chicago’s city departments, 60% receive federal grants. Some rely on federal dollars more than others.

Here’s a look at the departments that are most reliant, in order:

Department of Environment Office of Budget and Management Department of Housing Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities Chicago Department of Public Health Chicago Department of Transportation

In addition to the federal funding the city gets, Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Transit Authority also get money from the federal government.
