Strong winds and dry conditions may create dangerous fire weather this week, and Xcel Energy is warning customers in Larimer and Weld Counties that certain areas may experience power outages Friday, according to a press release.
The company is considering a Public Safety Power Shutoff beginning around 7 a.m. Friday in Larimer and Weld Counties, including parts of Loveland, Fort Collins and Windsor, according to a Wednesday press release.
For details on exact locations that may be impacted, customers can visit Xcel’s outage map, co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-safety/outage-map.
The National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch for wind and low relative humidity beginning Thursday morning in several counties, including Larimer and Weld. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 40 mph. A fire weather watch has not been issued for Friday, but like the weather, that could change.
Xcel Energy expects less customers to be impacted this week than during last month’s severe windstorm when nearly 100,000 customers across the Front Range were without power.
“This is not a step the company takes lightly,” the press release stated.
The company is already expecting Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings to be activated Friday, which means power lines will be more sensitive and can instantly stop providing energy if an issue is detected, like a tree branch touching the line, the press release stated.
The press release recommended customers stay up to date on current weather conditions, power outages, keep phones and other electronic devices charged, and build a home emergency kit that includes things like a battery-powered radio, flashlights, bottled water, a first aid kit, and other essential items.
Updates about this specific potential power shutoff will be shared on this event page on Xcel’s website, co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-safety/wildfires/power-shutoffs/event-update.
