Boston Red Sox Signing Ranger Suarez to a Five-Year Deal ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Well that came out of nowhere. One of the last few remaining big name starting pitcher free agents is now off the board, with the Boston Red Sox LEAPING into their first free agent signing of the offseason.

Ranger Suarez is off to Boston:

Source confirms: Free-agent LHP Ranger Suárez in agreement with Red Sox on five-year, $130M contract. First: @JonHeyman, @BNightengale

— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) January 14, 2026

The deal is quite large, but is roughly in the range of what was expected for the 30-year-old lefty. Suarez might not be an ace, but he’s been consistently quite good for the last five seasons (20ish percent better than league average results and peripherals, 150ish innings per year, 3ish WAR). This is the price of poker on that kind of starting pitcher.

The Red Sox were known to be considering a free agent starting pitcher move, particularly in the days after Alex Bregman bolted for the Cubs. But this is a much larger signing than I had been envisioning for a club that already featured a rotation group of Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, Brayan Bello, Johan Oviedo, Patrick Sandoval, Kutter Crawford, Payton Tolle, and Connelly Early, among others. Not that you can’t use more depth and more front-half options – we saw this with the Cubs, obviously – but it’s just not where I expected the Red Sox to put their biggest chunk of offseason money.

It’s interesting.

The Cubs traded for a controlled starting pitcher in Edward Cabrera to set up their big free agent signing on the positional side in Alex Bregman. Could the Red Sox be doing the same thing in reverse? Signing a big free agent starting pitcher to set up their ability to trade for a big bat? They now have an even more full big league starting rotation, and guys like Payton Tolle and Connelly Early have significant trade value.

… uh oh. Those were the guys we talked about as hypothetical pieces of the return in a Nico Hoerner trade earlier today, as speculated by Ken Rosenthal. Surely these things aren’t actually connected, right? Are the Red Sox coming after Hoerner or maybe Matt Shaw?
