Marmonte, Mission League parity is on display in opening week of action ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

Narrow victories. Potential game-tying shots rimming in and out. Stunning results. All in the first week of Mission League and Marmonte League play.

Bedlam.

In the Mission League, No. 1 Sierra Canyon escaped St. Francis 50-47 last Wednesday night after Golden Knights point guard Luke Paulus’ game-tying 3-point attempt rimmed in and out. St. Francis 7-foot-4 center Cherif Millogo was impressive, tallying 14 points, 14 blocks and five blocks. Paulus pitched in 10 points.

Sierra Canyon was led by 5-star guard Brandon McCoy’s 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. North Carolina commit Max Adams had 14 points in the win at home.

On the same night, Loyola stunned Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks 72-68. The Cubs erased a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, anchored by a stingy full-court press and Deuce Newt’s 23 points. The victory didn’t just send a message to the whole league about taking the Cubs lightly, it was a feather in the cap for new coach Cam Joyce, who came from Ohio.

Friday’s round of Mission League games was just as dramatic. Chaminade beat Loyola 55-48 led by 22 points from senior Temi Olafisoye, who was 7 of 13 from the field. The result, again, was a reminder of how competitive the league is from top to bottom.

Sierra Canyon edged Notre Dame 78-74 despite NaVorro Bowman Jr.’s best effort to spoil the ESPN2 broadcast. Bowman Jr. was fantastic, scoring 36 points (with six 3s) in front of a UCLA assistant who was in attendance in Chatsworth. Once again, Brandon McCoy (21 points) and Maxi Adams (16 point) led the Trailblazers to victory. Brannon Martinsen added 18 points.

Harvard-Westlake started strong with two blowout wins over Chaminade (84-51) and Crespi (80-53). The lopsided win over the Celts was surprising, considering Crespi’s nonleague performance, which many think will put them in the Division 1 playoffs.

MISSION LEAGUE STANDINGS

Harvard-Westlake 19-2, 3-0

Sierra Canyon 16-1, 3-0

St. Francis 18-3, 2-1

Chaminade 19-3, 1-2

Notre Dame 14-6, 1-2

Crespi 14-8, 1-2

Loyola 11-11, 1-2

Alemany 14-7, 0-3

MARMONTE LEAGUE IS UPSIDE DOWN

Calabasas was the story of the week in the Marmonte League. The Coyotes beat previously-unbeaten Thousand Oaks (63-57) and Westlake (81-70) to start 2-0 along with Oaks Christian.

Calabasas, led by longtime coach Jon Palarz, is led by Johnny Thyfault (15 points per game) and Calvin Goetz (14 ppg). The Coyotes lost to Newbury Park in overtime on Monday night but can really shake things up against Oaks Christian Wednesday night. But, the element of surprise is no longer on Calabasas’ side.

Oaks Christian looks to be the strongest team under coach Mark Amaral. The Lions are led by two standout sophomores, which is even more impressive, Brady Sullivan and Hank Baskett. The next four games will likely put Oaks Christian in the driver’s seat for a league title if it can take care of business against Calabasas, Westlake, Calabasas (again) and Thousand Oaks, respectively.

The head scratcher is Thousand Oaks, which started 16-0 before going 0-3 in its first three league tilts. The Lancers lost to Calabasas, Oaks Christian and Westlake, but they can get back on track in their next three games against Agoura (twice) and Newbury Park before attempting to avenge those earlier losses.

MARMONTE LEAGUE STANDINGS

Oaks Christian 18-3, 3-0

Calabasas 14-6, 2-1

Westlake 14-7, 2-1

Agoura 9-11, 1-2

Newbury Park 10-11, 1-2

Thousand Oaks 16-3, 0-3
