ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — With the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina just three weeks away, excitement is building among the Rochester Americans, especially with NHL players returning to the games for the first time since 2014. For some Amerks players, it’s a chance to see former teammates shine on the world stage.
Former Amerks in the OlympicsCurrent Amerks players are excited about watching former Amerks play in the 2026 Winter Olympics.Isak Rosen, an Amerks player, shared the significance of the Olympics.
“It’s up there with probably playing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. And especially now for the guys who are playing this year, they’ve been waiting a long time,” said Rosen.
Former Amerks stars like Tage Thompson, JJ Peterka, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will represent their countries in the Olympics. Thompson will don the red, white, and blue for the U.S., while Peterka and Luukkonen will represent Germany and Finland, respectively.
Amerks head coach Michael Leone praised the organization.
“Speaks to the organization of the players that they’ve drafted and the amount of talent that’s been brought into the organization,” said Leone.
Trevor Kuntar, another Amerks player, expressed his excitement.
“Especially being from Buffalo, I train with some of those guys in the summer so to see that is awesome. And to see guys who work their butts off get rewarded like that is awesome,” said Kuntar.
Inside the Amerks locker room, the Olympics are sparking friendly competition.
“We have a wide range of countries in our locker room, so I think it’ll be fun, and we’ll probably get little competitions going too,” said Kuntar.
“I’m sure there will be some good banter and some good bragging rights for sure. Maybe guys will be having to buy each other dinner because their country loses or whatever,” said Amerks player Carson Meyer.
Isak Rosen highlighted the difference between the World Championships and the Olympics.
“Usually when it’s Worlds, the North Americans don’t care. We’ll see now when it’s Olympics if they care,” said Rosen, who is from Sweden.
“This will be big for bragging rights and I hope we beat Sweden, now,” joked Meyer.
Despite the competitive spirit, the Amerks players support each other and hope to see their teammates in future Olympic games.
“I’m sure we might have guys on this team now like (Isak Rosen) and (Konsta Helenius), guys that are really, really good young players that maybe down the line they’re gonna get a chance in the Olympics.”
As the Olympics approach, the Amerks remain hopeful that the next Olympian might just emerge from Rochester.
