A heavy band of wind-whipped snow made for near white-out conditions and prompted a snow squall warning for several Chicago-area counties Wednesday morning, but just how much snow is expected to fall?
According to the National Weather Service the “quick burst” of snow isn’t expected to amount to much as it moves across northern Illinois and into northwest Indiana, but the most intense snowfall was expected “in the heart of the Chicago metro area” and northwest Indiana.
A coating to an inch of snow was expected with the system, though by 9:30 a.m. some locations had already reported over an inch.
In Schaumburg, 1.5 inches of snow was reported, an inch of new snow fell in Tinley Park and 1.6 inches fell in Valparaiso, Indiana.
But a much bigger threat is still to come.
Over the next 12 to 24 hours, up to a foot of snow could fall in parts of northwest Indiana.
In LaPorte County, a winter storm warning is in place through 1 p.m. Thursday, with between six and 12 inches of heavy, lake effect snow possible.
“The worst travel conditions will be 5PM-8AM. Alter your travel plans if possible,” the NWS wrote on X.
After that, a “wintry pattern” will bring daily chances for snow, blustery winds and cold temperatures.
The possibility of accumulating snow returns to the Chicago-area forecast as snow showers arrive on Thursday evening, according to models.
The NWS forecasts “a few inches of accumulating snow is possible” with that system.
Another brief round of snow showers could occur on Friday, but some of that precipitation may fall in the form of rain, as temperatures will likely be right around the freezing mark.
There is also a possibility of snow in the forecast for Sunday across the entire area, though timing remains unclear. Temperatures Sunday will be significantly colder with wind chills potentially in the single digits.
Despite numerous chances for snow, high accumulations aren’t expected outside of northwest Indiana.
All in all, by the end of the weekend, much of the Chicago area may see only a few inches of snow in total, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said.
