Reprising her role as fierce Na'vi warrior Neytiri has resulted in Saldaña's impressive achievement, surpassing Scarlett Johansson who gained the top spot last year after her appearance in Jurassic World Rebirth.
Saldaña's work across the three Avatar movies has certainly boosted her up the rankings, with the original 2009 instalment still being the highest-grossing film of all-time, even 17 years after its release, earning over $2.92 billion globally according to Box Office Mojo. Meanwhile, 2022's highly-anticipated sequel, The Way of Water, raked in $2.34 billion, making it the third highest-grossing film of all-time behind Avengers: Endgame in second place (which Saldaña also stars in) with $2.7 billion.
Beyond Marvel and the seeming golden touch of director James Cameron, it appears as though Saldaña is the most bankable movie star there is.
Thanking those who played a part in her landmark achievement, Saldaña took to social media. "I just want to express my sincerest gratitude for the extraordinary journey that has led me to become the highest-grossing film actor of all time today," she wrote. "An achievement made possible entirely, entirely by the incredible franchises and the collaborators that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of, to every director who placed their trust in me."
With two more Avatar releases slated for December 2029 and 2031, respectively, it looks like Saldaña might be set to continue her rule of the box office roost.
