When high school basketball schedules are set months before the start of the winter season, players, coaches and fans from Greeley Central and Greeley West never have to deliberate long to pick one game worth circling on their schedules.
That marquee matchup that supporters from each school have had in the backs of their minds for weeks will move to the forefront Thursday night.
The Wildcats will host their decades-long crosstown rival, the Spartans, in a girls basketball game at 5:30 p.m., immediately followed by a boys hoops clash around 7 p.m.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Greeley Central’s girls carried a 3-5 record, while its boys were 4-4. West’s girls started their season 4-4, while its boys jumped out to a 3-5 start.
These two programs haven’t been in the same conference for a couple years now, but this being a nonconference affair hasn’t taken any luster out of this drama-filled rivalry, routinely played within a packed gymnasium.

Greeley Central’s girls program has been even more dominant in this rivalry. The Wildcats have won 18 consecutive games against West.
The Spartans’ last win against Greeley Central in a girls game came on Dec. 21, 2011, when many of the players on these current squads were mere infants.
Will the Wildcats continue to control this heated rivalry, or will Greeley West finally turn the tide?
