Marlins Trade Another Starting Pitcher, Sending Ryan Weathers to the Yankees ...Middle East

We talk often about how trade talks between clubs can facilitate future moves. Sometimes that means consummating a trade for a long-discussed player, a la the Cubs and Marlins and Edward Cabrera. Sometimes that means consummating a trade for a different player, though, since both sides have already talked about the other side of the coin. Which prospects are actually sought after and available? Well, now you know.

Incidentally, we just got a great example of that one, and it was also tied to the Marlins and Edward Cabrera. Although those talks with the Yankees faltered at the goal line for reasons that haven’t yet publicly been reported, the two clubs kept right at it and struck a deal for lefty Ryan Weathers instead:

Source confirms: Yankees acquiring LHP Ryan Weathers from Marlins for OF Dillon Lewis, OF Brendan Jones, IF Dillon Jason and IF Juan Matheus. Lewis was a player the Marlins sought in their talks with the Yankees on Edward Cabrera. First: @JackCurryYES and @CraigMish

Weathers is immensely talented, but has suffered a string of injuries that have limited his time on the mound in the big leagues. For a Yankees club with an overload of starting pitching, but much of which faces injury/rehab questions/timelines, it makes sense to take a swing on someone like Weathers. They may be able to incorporate him in the way the Dodgers did last year with all their talented-but-innings-limited starting pitching.

Something very interesting to point out: the prospects the Yankees used to make this deal included two 2024 draft picks from the 12th and 13th round, neither of whom was signed to an over-slot bonus, an undrafted free agent signing from 2023, and a recent IFA prospect who did not get a significant signing bonus. The Yankees turned that group – relatively quickly – into a high-upside, controlled, big league starting pitcher. Even if Weathers doesn’t work out, that is a massive, massive scouting and development win for the Yankees, and the kind of thing you aspire to be able to pull off with your later-round draft picks and fringier prospect signings.

Also something to keep an eye on: with Weathers added to the mix, the Yankees COULD conceivably now justify sending out one of their own younger, controlled starting pitchers in a trade for Freddy Peralta. They’ve been rumored to be in on him for a while, and that’s the kind of thing the Brewers like to do in these sorts of trades, swapping one big leaguer for another (plus prospects) with more team control.

Meanwhile, the Marlins continue to go big on gathering up as much positional prospect talent as possible, having added seven such prospects between the Weathers and Cabrera trades, alone. All but four of their top 16 prospects are position players. And two of those four, Thomas White and Robbie Snelling, might be big league starters this year.
