DANVILLE — Not many picked Monte Vista to be one of the favorites to win the East Bay Athletic League but after beating California on Tuesday night, the Mustangs have officially put the EBAL on notice.

Monte Vista picked up a signature win, defeating California 64-53 on the road to remain perfect through two league games. Four different players scored in double figures as Monte Vista’s balanced scoring attack proved too much for the Grizzlies.

“I was so proud of our guys,” Monte Vista coach Nick Jones said after the game. “The first half was as good as we had played in a long time. I mean, we were lights out defensively in the first half, the ball was moving. We were making plays. … They really came to play today, which was fun to see.”

Max Nishikawa led Monte Vista with 21 points, Ian Desai added 12, Liron Cojocaru scored 11 and Gavin McMilllan chipped in 10.

Brayde Kuykendall led California with 20 points.

Jones said Monte Vista’s defense in the first half was the best his group has played all season.

The Mustangs held California to just 12 points in the first half – three coming in the second quarter – and built a 32-12 advantage by halftime.

“I thought we were very good defensively, and actually, I thought our defense triggered our offense,” Jones said. “We had a lot of steals, came up with a lot of fifty-fifty balls, deflections early that allowed us to get out and transition, which kind of set the tone for the game.”

California made a push in the third quarter that cut Monte Vista’s halftime lead to just 10. But the Mustangs kept their lead in the fourth quarter and notched their best win of the season.

California, which was coming off back-to-back wins over No. 3 St. Ignatius and No. 14 Dublin, looked like the early favorites to win the EBAL. But after Monte Vista’s win, the Mustangs have firmly inserted themselves into the conversation.

“I think our league is so good,” Jones said. “The coaching, the talent is really good as everybody knows. We just take things one day at a time. We’re going to enjoy the Cal win and we’re going to move on to Foothill tomorrow night.”
