Despite overcoming a 16-point second-half deficit, the Colorado State men’s basketball team couldn’t keep Fresno State from pulling away in the final minutes and lost to the Bulldogs, 79-69, Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.
With the loss, the Rams fell to 11-6 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain West Conference.
Fresno State took a 38-22 lead in the first minute of the second half before the Rams went on a 19-3 run to tie the game at 41 after a layup by Josh Pascarelli with 13:39 left in the game.
The Bulldogs responded with a 13-4 run to go ahead 54-45 with 8:30 remaining and the Rams never got closer than six points after that.
Brandon Rechsteiner led another balanced scoring attack for the Rams, who had four players in double figures, with 18 points. Carey Booth added 15 points, Jevin Muniz 12 and Pascarelli 11. Booth led CSU with nine rebounds, coming one board short of a double-double.
The Rams dug themselves in a hole early in the first half. Despite six lead changes in the first few minutes of the game, a 3-pointer by Jac Mani gave the Bulldogs a 13-12 lead and began an 11-2 run for Fresno State and the Bulldogs never trailed again.
Fresno State took its largest lead of the first half at 36-22 with 14 seconds left before halftime.
The Rams shot only 31% from the field and made only 2 of 18 from beyond the arc in the first half. CSU shot better in the second half, going 6-of-11 on 3-pointers and 63% from the field, but it wasn’t enough. CSU turned the ball over 11 times in the game and was outrebounded 32-31 by the Bulldogs.
CSU will continue its road trip Friday at Boise State.
