The Crimson Tide put forth a dominating effort at home on senior against the Yellow Jackets, with both the women’s and men’s teams emerging victorious in home water, highlighted by the Crimson Tide setting four new Alabama Aquatic Center records in the process.

Women’s Recap

Senior Emily Jones led the way for Alabama, accounting for three of the pool records. Individually, Jones set the 100 backstroke pool record in 51.29, besting the 2008 mark from Florida’s Gemma Spofforth of 51.57.

That same relay that Jones kickstarted ended up setting a pool record of their own. In addition to Jones, Jada Scott (1:00.72), Gaby Van Brunt (50.86), and Cadence Vincent (46.80) combined in 3:29.67, the time comfortably took down the 2023 mark from the Texas 400 medley relay in 3:32.85.

The third and final pool record that Jones played a hand in came at the conclusion of the meet in the 200 free relay, where Charlotte Rosendale (22.32), Jones (21.83), Tessa Giele in her Alabama debut (21.89), and Vincent (21.49) touched first in 1:27.53, topping the already team owned pool record from a season earlier.

Alabama continued to impress throughout the meet; senior Mackenzie Brandt touched first in the 1000 free in 9:41.85, over 15 seconds ahead of her teammate Stella Watts, who finished 2nd in 9:56.95. Brandt later earned another win, touching first in the 500 free in 4:43.56 to double up on the event wins.

Rin Drudge swept the diving wins, topping the final scores on both 1-meter (275.18) and 3-meter (291.45) for Alabama.

Giele notched two individual NCAA qualifying times on the day in her first NCAA meet; she finished 2nd in both the 50 free (22.21) and 100 butterfly (52.19).

Georgia Tech’s day was highlighted by junior Vivien Rothwell, who lowered her own 100 backstroke school record by nearly a quarter of a second, finishing just behind Jones of Alabama in 52.72.

Yellow Jackets senior Phoebe Wright also finished just behind Jones, this time in the 200 back, clocking 1:54.59, the second fastest time in program history in 1:54.59.

Men’s Recap

The Crimson Tide men also made an impact on the record books. Headlining the men’s performances was the 400 medley relay quartet of Tommy Hagar (45.87), Noah Saylor (53.20), Sean Niewold (45.08), and Zarek Wilson (43.13), clipping the 2008 time from Florida of 3:08.57 with their winning effort of 3:07.28.

Niewold, who made his collegiate debut at this meet against the Yellow Jackets, picked up the individual event win in the 50 free in 19.52. He also finished 3rd in the 100 free, stopping the clock in 43.77.

Hagar, a junior, picked up a pair of 200 yard race wins as well. First, in the 200 free, Hagar’s blistering second half helped propel him ahead of his teammate Adam Varga (1:35.42) in 1:35.09. He later earned a win in the 200 back, winning the event by over a full second in 1:41.07.

The Crimson Tide completed the 1-2-3 sweep of the 500 free; leading the way was junior Leonardo Alcantara in 4:16.56. Just a tick under six seconds behind was freshman Joao Pierre Campos, who clocks 4:22.55; freshman Gabriel Moura was 3rd in 4:26.18.

Junior Lance Thompson was untouchable in the 400 IM, finishing five seconds better than Georgia Tech freshman Berk Erturk (3:52.95) in a blistering 3:47.05.

The Alabama 200 free relay did close out the meet on a high note, with Niewold (19.48), Tim Korstanje (19.19), Drayden Bell (19.24), and Wilson (19.53) closed out their winning day in 1:17.44.

Georgia Tech freshman Tobin Uhl won the 200 breast, clocking 1:58.09, continuing his undefeated 200 breast record on the season.

Junior Max Fowler swept the diving events for Georgia Tech, winning both the 1-meter (360.23) and 3-meter (381.90). His 1-meter score ranks 8th all-time in program history.
