ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Monroe County Probation Department is planning to purchase 30 cameras to equip some of its officers. The department is also seeking funding to ensure all officers can carry a Taser.
News10NBC investigative reporter Jennifer Lewke reported from the County Office Building that the department oversees about 5,000 people, with an increasing number on probation for gun-related crimes. Currently, about half of the 130 probation officers in Monroe County carry guns, with new hires required to do so.
The county wants to provide officers with a non-lethal option and begin phasing in body cameras. Initially, 30 cameras would be shared among officers conducting home visits. Last year, during these check-ins, officers recovered 21 guns from individuals prohibited from possessing them.
“We see a great deal of individuals that are on probation who have gun offenses, who have committed violent acts, who have been involved in domestic violence situations and still a focus on, if you will, redemption but also recognizing that we have a duty to the public and especially to those victims that have unfortunately been hurt in many ways both physically and psychologically as a result of the actions that the offender took,” said Rich Tantalo, director of public safety for Monroe County.
Tantalo said the cameras are intended to ensure accountability for officers. The footage can be used to assess performance and train future officers. The program’s initial cost is $600,000, which the legislature is expected to vote on soon.
In other counties, some probation officers wear body cameras, while others do not. However, there is a growing trend toward using cameras, particularly in areas where officers carry guns.
