Collin Gosselin Reveals What Viewers Never Saw on ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’—and Calls It ‘Scripted Happiness’ ...Saudi Arabia

For years, viewers watched the Gosselin family’s everyday adventures unfold on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8, but Collin Gosselin says some of the happiest moments captured on camera weren’t quite what they seemed.

During a Nov. 3 appearance on The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast, the 22-year-old former reality TV star opened up about growing up in front of television cameras and shared memories of what he describes as “scripted happiness” during filming.

Gosselin and Bure became friends while filming Season 5 of Fox’s Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, where they bonded over the physically demanding experience and candid conversations about their personal lives. Their podcast appearance marked a reunion for the two, who hadn’t seen each other since filming the reality competition.

“The biggest lie of reality TV is that it’s reality,” Gosselin told Bure, explaining that he often felt pressured to perform rather than simply be himself.

According to Gosselin, the production crew would sometimes introduce things designed to make the children happy, only to remove them once the desired footage had been captured.

“One thing that was hidden really well was that there would be moments where the crew, the production would bring out puppies, for instance, and say, oh, kids, play with the puppies, have fun,” he recalled.

But the experience didn’t always last beyond the cameras rolling.

“And then they’d cut and take the puppies away, you know, take the ice cream away, whatever it was,” Gosselin said.

He explained that those moments were confusing as a child because he couldn’t understand why he wasn’t allowed to simply enjoy the experiences without performing for the cameras.

“There were so many of these little moments where so many of them were, it was scripted happiness, I called it, just to get the right shot,” he said.

Gosselin also recalled that, as he grew older, he began to resent the lack of control he had over his own childhood.

He said that by the time he was around 8 or 9 years old, he wanted to spend more time doing ordinary childhood activities, including playing with friends and attending sleepovers.

“For a long time, it wasn’t an option,” he said of expressing his desire to stop filming, explaining that he was frightened to tell his family he no longer wanted to participate.

But when Bure asked whether he remembered any genuinely happy moments from his childhood, Gosselin had an immediate answer.

He recalled times when he and his siblings managed to get away from the cameras and play outside together.

“When you say happy moment, I think of all the times I was playing with my siblings and there were no cameras,” he said. “And it was genuine happiness. It wasn’t scripted happiness.”

Bure, who began acting as a young child herself, noted that her parents had always given her the option to stop working in entertainment. Gosselin said hearing about that experience made him reflect on how different his own childhood might have been if participating in the family’s reality show had been a choice.

The former TLC star has also written about his experiences in his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, which was released in October.

While Gosselin has previously discussed aspects of his childhood in other interviews, his conversation with Bure offered another look at how he remembers the experience of growing up on reality television.
