This news comes less than 24 hours after the Steelers fell to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round in the playoffs. And while I’m not wholly surprised by this news, it is a bit jarring.
After all, Mike Tomlin posted a record of 193-114 as Pittsburgh’s head coach. The Steelers made the playoffs 13 times under his watch, including in five of the last six seasons. Those Tomlin-led teams posted 12 seasons with at least 10+ wins and never finished a year with a sub-.500 record. While Pittsburgh was never able to recapture the magic of Tomlim’s second season, in which the team won Super Bowl XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals, the Steelers were a consistently competitive team throughout the duration of his time coaching that squad. It helps explain why the Chicago Bears reportedly called the Steelers about possibly trading for Tomlin last offseason before hiring Ben Johnson to be their head coach.
What’s next for Mike Tomlin is up in the air. I imagine he could take a page out of the Bruce Arians and Sean Payton playbook by taking the 2026 season off, then kicking the tires around job openings next offseason. Perhaps Tomlin could be in line for a job covering the NFL for one of the league’s TV networks or streaming platforms. But that stuff will sort itself out. In the meantime, the Steelers join the collection of teams in search of a new head coach this offseason. What a turn of events.
