Boy, am I happy the Cubs have already landed Alex Bregman in free agency. Now we don’t have to sweat the latest Kyle Tucker free agent rumors or languish over whether the Cubs should jump back into that race, given how different than expected the reported terms and timeline are starting to look.

Kyle Tucker Free Agent Update
According to Sammon, the New York Mets are trying to go the super short-term, high AAV route with Kyle Tucker, offering him a three-year deal in the $120-$140 million range.
That would give Tucker an average annual value in the $40-$46M range, which is right between Aaron Judge ($40M) and Juan Soto ($51M), which feels fair. Of course, the deals for those free-agent outfielders ALSO included MANY more years, which Tucker is seemingly unable to command, at least not at the AAV he wants.
Although that’s not exactly my full read on his situation.

And while Los Angeles’ offer is more likely to look like the Mets’ deal, Toronto does feel like a team that can go longer on term – especially if they shut the door on Bo Bichette (which feels likely at this point).
Likewise, while the Yankees are focused on Cody Bellinger, those negotiations have been on shaky ground of late. If that door gets slammed shut, no one would be surprised to see the Yankees jump in on Tucker, which could turn everything upside down, putting more pressure on the Mets and Blue Jays each for different reasons.
In other words, I still think Kyle Tucker has options; it just may take some time to play out.
And yet, he may not want to be patient.
In the same report at The Athletic, Will Sammon cites multiple industry sources who believe “a decision from Tucker, who turns 29 on Saturday, could come as early as this week.” That’s, uh, very soon!
Perhaps, then, this story getting out is just a little bit of last-minute work from Tucker’s agency, who wants to make sure Toronto (or whichever team he’s leaning towards) really puts their best offer on the table. We’ve seen this story play out that way a bunch of times before. Why not again?
Ultimately, it’s been an odd, probably frustrating offseason for Kyle Tucker, who just isn’t drumming up the sort of interest anyone had envisioned for him last spring.
It seems those second-half, injury-riddled struggles really put a damper on his market. I mean, this was a guy who, before the season, was getting projected to easily clear $400 million in free agency – especially after his SCORCHING hot start with the Cubs. Sure, we thought it was a little aggressive, especially after the way things ended, but a near-record deal was hardly out of scope.
Now, it feels like he may have to stretch to get even $300 million, lest he accept a short-term deal at the AAV he was otherwise seeking.
Of course, Kyle Tucker is still exceedingly young. If he were to get a deal that allows him to hit free agency again next winter (or shortly thereafter), he may still be able to land the overall money he’s seeking. We’ve seen it work a dozen times over, mostly from Scott Boras clients, so maybe it’ll happen again. Even still, I think we all get the vibe that Tucker isn’t exactly as eager to play that game as others. To me, he feels like a guy who just wants to find his long-term home and stay there.
Here’s hoping he finds what he’s looking for, which is something I can only say so comfortably without emotion because I feel great about where the Cubs are for 2026.
