In an effort to create next-level wiener fever this winter at Breckenridge, the resort’s culinary experts came up with an imposing monument to the humble frankfurter: The Hot Dog Tower.
One might even call it statuesque.
Working in secret to reimagine the presentation of the All-American hot dog, Breck’s food and beverage braintrust moved doggedly through multiple variations of the tower and its taste treats before settling on a two-tiered utensil with six all-beef hot dogs cradled in pretzel buns with waffle fries. It includes six “signature sauces,” known elsewhere as condiments: Garlic Parmesan, Mango Habanero, Korean BBQ, Pickle Ketchup, Ale Mustard and Chimichurri Aioli.
“There were a few iterations of it,” explained Breckenridge spokeswoman Sarah McLear. “They were trying to figure out what looks best, what works best and what tastes best. We had a few different iterations of the tower, too, experimenting with different dishware.”
The creation of Breck’s Hot Dog Tower, priced at $60, is part of an initiative by Vail Resorts to revamp on-mountain menus with items that are “a little more energetic and fun and young,” according to John Plack, senior director of communications for the Broomfield-based company. “It’s a little bit of build-your-audience, things that seem to be on trend — Instagrammable, ‘phone eats first’ moments.”
The menu additions on Vail Resorts’ mountains this winter aim to reflect their distinctive clienteles. At high-end Vail, the new Martini Lunch for Two at The 10th, an upscale restaurant at Mid Vail, “revives the lost art of the long lunch” according to a company news release. It includes an oversized Caesar Salad, Truffle Fries and Martinis for two, priced at $95.
What works at Vail might not at Breckenridge or Keystone, so the aim is brand differentiation.
“A lot of our audience likes to go to multiple resorts in the Vail Resorts portfolio, and we don’t want it to be the same old chicken tenders at every resort,” McLear said. “We want folks to say, ‘I want to go to Breckenridge to get that Hot Dog Tower with the pretzel buns.’ Or, ‘I want to go to Keystone, because I love Labonte’s barbecue.’”
The Hot Dog Tower seems well in keeping with the Breckenridge vibe.
“Think about seafood towers, opulent, over-the-top seafood experiences,” Plack said. “What we felt was more appropriate for Breckenridge was the Hot Dog Tower. You don’t go to Breck to eat lobster claws, you want a hot dog. It’s a little bit elevated, and a little bit playful. I think it’s super fun.”

Breckenridge isn’t the only Summit County resort going to the dogs. Keystone, another Vail Resorts mountain, has introduced Dog Cat, a snowcat that prowls the slopes with wrapped-in-foil hot dogs, non-alcoholic beverages and chips.
“We want folks who are enjoying our mountains to have an experience when they’re dining, and have that experience be differentiated from the different ski resorts they like to visit,” McLear said. “We’re looking for ways we can elevate that guest experience and give folks something to look forward to, besides our great terrain, to make stopping for a bite to eat more of an experience.”
