In other words, balanced blood sugar helps your body and brain operate in a calmer, more efficient state throughout the day. It also reduces the constant internal stress signals that occur when your body is repeatedly forced to manage sharp spikes and drops in glucose.
One of the most influential moments for blood sugar regulation happens first thing in the morning, when your body is especially sensitive to what you're putting in it. After an overnight fast, foods and drinks that are high in sugar or quickly digested carbohydrates can trigger a sharp glucose spike, setting the tone for the rest of the day. That initial spike is often followed by a crash, which can drive cravings, overeating and energy dips hours later.

The Popular ‘Healthy’ Morning Drink That Spikes Blood Sugar, According to Registered Dietitians
Any barista can tell you first-hand about the popularity of oat milk lattes. There’s a long list of alternative milk choices (almond, soy, macadamia…), but oat milk is a go-to for many. “Oat milk lattes can be part of a healthy diet, but they’re not nutritionally complete on their own,” says registered dietitian Melissa Rifkin, RD.

If you have an oat milk latte in the morning and don’t pair it with anything to eat, registered dietitian May Zhu, RDN, says it could lead to an energy crash later—especially after the caffeine from the espresso wears off. This, she explains, could also lead to craving more carbs.

She says that examples of this include eggs, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, a protein bar with less than 5 grams of added sugar or nut butter on whole-grain toast. Zibdeh says that avocado toast or a handful of nuts are other foods to pair with an oat milk latte to avoid a blood sugar spike.
All three dietitians say that having a latte made with almond milk, soy milk or cow’s milk are ways to avoid as dramatic a blood sugar increase. “Oat milk may cause higher blood sugar increases than unsweetened almond or soy milk because it's higher in carbohydrates. Almond and soy milk have slightly more protein and fat relative to carbs, creating a better macronutrient balance for blood sugar management,” Zhu explains.
