The Comeback, The Halftime Speech, The Celebration, The Handshake, and The Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I couldn’t imagine celebrating the 9th birthday of BN Bears in a better way than witnessing the greatest comeback in franchise playoff history.

IT HAPPENED: You weren’t dreaming. It wasn’t a figment of your imagination. They really did it. The Chicago Bears defeated the Green Bay Packers in a playoff game. And they did it in epic fashion. Chicago’s football team erased an 18-point deficit against its arch nemesis. The Bears had played in 37 postseason games going into last night’s game, and never won a playoff game when down by 8+ points. Ope! So much for that stat. Riding the wave of quarterback Caleb Williams and a rejuvenated second-half defense, this team authored an all-time great chapter in franchise history. I hope you stayed awake for that one. Say what you want about Caleb Williams. Call him The Iceman, The Acrylic Assassin, Mr. Flamboyancy, or whatevber nickname you come up with or come across while floating around the internet. Just call him the quarterback who beat the Packers in his first-ever playoff start. I’d gladly trade wins like that for not reaching the 4,000-yard passing or 70 percent completion rate numbers. You can’t teach winning traits — and that dude has ’em in spades.

The extended cut of Ben Johnson’s “Good, Better, Best” began with the Bears head coach yelling “F— The Packers!” Absolute cinema. I could not have imagined this scene in January 2025. Could you? I had a good feeling about the offensive play-caller and play designer that Chicago hired last year. But I had no clue this team hired someone who was part evil genius, part meatball. Then again, maybe I should’ve seen it coming when Johnson sent strays Matt LaFleur’s way in his introductory press conference. Judging by The Handshake after this one, there will be no love lost between these two. A look at all three handshakes this season, each colder than the one that came before it:

— ✶Ⓜ️????? ▶️✶ (@_MarcusD3_) January 11, 2026 There is a non-zero chance that this was the last handshake between Ben Johnson and Matt LaFleur as part of the Bears-Packers rivalry. The chatter surrounding LaFleur’s future is only going to get louder after Green Bay coughed up an 18-point lead. Tack on that the Packers have one playoff win to show for the last four years, have qualified only as the No. 7 seed in the last three seasons, and have not won a division title since Aaron Rodgers left is going to weigh heavy on fans up north — and possibly management. Here is a fun fact from ESPN’s Rob Demovsky (via Twitter/X) after the Packers gave up 25 points in the fourth quarter: The Bears became just the third team in NFL history to score 25 or more points in the fourth quarter of a playoff game (1934 Giants and the 1992 Eagles). A friend of mine sent me this quote from then-Jets coach Robert Saleh, who beat the Packers at Lambeau Field in 2022. And after watching the three Bears-Packers games this season, this quote turned out to be accurate and prophetic:

#Jets HC Robert Saleh shared his halftime speech with the media, ‘just keep giving the #Packers body blow after body blow, keep hitting them in the mouth, we felt like if we kept taking them down to deeper water they’ll find out they can’t swim’ DAMN ? what a quote: ? @nyjets pic.twitter.com/9LRDq2vfRF

— Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25) October 16, 2022 What takes the wildness factor of this quote to another level is that Robert Saleh and Matt LaFleur are friends. If you’ll recall, the Packers hired Saleh in an advisory role after the Jets fired him. And to think, that happened *AFTER* Saleh said those words. Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes, you have to give your buddy some cold, hard truths. That’s what good friends do. But dang. That’s an ice cold quote. Speaking of ice cold quotes, Ben Johnson shared (via the Tribune) what he had to say to the team at halftime: “This is a great opportunity to turn this thing around into a game we’ll never forget.” Little did he know that he was planting the seeds for something special. That team came out of the locker room playing I trust whoever it was in the Bears locker room who had control of the aux in this moment:

#Bears 50 cent “Many Men” being played at disrespectful levels in the locker room!!! LFG ?⬇️

— Jason McKie (@Jmack37) January 11, 2026 Between the 50 Cent “Many Men” drop and the use of DJ Pharris’ “It’s Chicago…” producer tag, this is a wonderful time to be a millennial who has interests that sit at the intersection of hip-hop and Bears football. This is a real thing: The Chicago Sun-Times has details on all the freebies and local deals that were unlocked after the Bears win. While there is plenty of animosity between the Bears and Packers, there were signs of sportsmanship last night:

— NFL (@NFL) January 11, 2026 If you’ll recall, Jaylon Johnson was the first on the scene when Christian Watson suffered his season-ending injury in the Week 18 game between the Bears and Packers to close out the 2024-25 NFL campaign. Scott Bair (Marquee) shares what was learned about this Bears team after pulling off an epic comeback. LOL ROME:

— NFL (@NFL) January 11, 2026 Rome Odunze (via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin) on knocking over Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson during the postgame celebration: “I told him I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to knock him down like that. I was just excited. I thought he was a little bit more athletic than I was (laughs). That’s my bad. I got a little too excited, but no, that’s my guy. I didn’t mean to bring him down. I owe him something for that.”

More Rome:

#Bears WR Rome Odunze on whether the 4th down play was Caleb Williams’ best throw of the season:“The best throw until he makes the next best throw. You could say that every week with this dude. He’s a spectacular talent.”(?️ @ChicagoBears) t.co/WRIcZpLI8Z pic.twitter.com/ZSS7TVF1HC

— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) January 11, 2026 As soon as I saw this pic from Rome’s fourth-down catch, I just knew I had to share it here: Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Look at the grit and determination Rome Odunze shows in his first game back after an extended injury-related absence. We’ll have plenty to say about that throw. But at some point, I’ll need to square away time for the catch of Odunze’s life. This should probbly go down as The Alex Bregman Game:

BREAKING: Cubs Sign Alex Bregman to MASSIVE Five-Year Deal t.co/XT5s5Mg1jA

— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) January 11, 2026 Shout out to my buddy Tyler who helped me go through the timestamps and game situation. The Bears were down 21-9 when the breaking news hit the wire that the Cubs were signing Alex Bregman. From that point forward, Chicago outscored Green Bay 22-6. I guess this makes Bregman an honorary Bear. That was the kind of game that had you texting friends, family members, and loved ones until the wee hours of this morning. Black coffee and leftover cold pizza will get me through the rest of this day. Let’s go. I’ll leave on this note: A friend and I (who are massive Star Wars nerds) discussed this video clip as a moment that was similar to what happened in last night’s Bears game: Darth Maul (the Packers) going into the Tatooine desert and finding Obi-Wan Kenobi (the Bears) after having heard about The Chosen One and thinking he was going to finish the job, only to get freaked with the okie-doke is a comp I can vibe with. As is Maul looking up at Kenobi as he is dying and asking “is he the one to avenge us?” is an all-time great scene in Star Wars lore. And we just watched the football version of that.
