The South Carolina women have officially finished their home slate of meets, and they remain undefeated on the season, winning every meet they have raced, including the Gamecock Invite in November.

The Virginia Tech men emerged victorious over South Carolina, scoring 185 points to the Gamecocks’ 113.

Women’s Meet Recap

The story all season with South Carolina has been their 200s of stroke and this week was no different as they won all five 200s on Saturday.

Senior Amy Riordan continues to shine in her final season with the team, winning the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke events. She swam 1:45.12 in the 200 free to lock up the event win by more than a second over Virginia Tech’s Chiara Klein.

In the 200 backstroke, she swam a new season best time of 1:51.78, touching eight tenths ahead of Carmen Weiler Sastre‘s 1:52.54 for the Hokies. That swim will move her up to 10th in the country this season, jumping Teagan O’Dell‘s 1:51.83 for Cal.

Fellow senior Jordan Agliano won the 200 butterfly in a season best 1:55.70, dropping from the 1:55.86 she swam at the Gamecock Invite, touching nearly three seconds ahead of freshman teammate Tori Abruzzo‘s 1:58.30 for 2nd.

Agliano also won the 100 butterfly in 53.17, coming in just three tenths ahead of teammate Taylor Grimley‘s 53.45.

The 200 breaststroke was won by junior Delaney Franklin, whose 2:12.26 was almost three seconds faster than South Carolina freshman Molly Yacoviello‘s 2:15.04 for 2nd place.

Franklin also won the women’s 200 IM in 1:59.50 to be the only swimmer under 2:00 in the event with Virginia Tech’s Amanda Barnard finishing 2nd in 2:00.67.

The Gamecocks started the meet with the top two spots in the 200 medley relay with their team of Riordan (24.84), Elizabeth Goodwin-Birnie (27.33), Taylor Grimley (24.26), and Dylan Scholes (21.83) coming in at 1:38.26, two seconds ahead of the South Carolina ‘B’ team.

Another senior, Breckin Gormley, also had a strong performance. She won the 1000 free in 9:48.25 and the 500 free in 4:47.17.

Elizabeth Goodwin-Birnie and Dylan Scholes were South Carolina’s other individual swimming event winners. Goodwin-Birnie won the 100 breast in 1:00.94 and Scholes won the 100 free in 49.21.

Senior Sophie Verzyl also won both diving events for the Gamecocks. She scored 361.63 in the 1 meter and 338.85 in the 3 meter.

Virginia Tech had a few individual event wins as well, along with the top time in the 400 free relay.

Carmen Weiler Sastre won two events for the Hokies, setting the top time in the 100 back at 51.59, a new season best time, dropping from the 51.88 she swam last week against Queens.

In the 50 free, Weiler Sastre swam 22.27 to come in about half-a-second ahead of South Carolina’s Dylan Scholes, who swam 22.81. This was also a new season best time for her.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Weiler Sastre (48.11), Emily Claesson (49.04), Eliza Tan (50.18), and Fanni Gyurinovics (49.07) swam 3:16.40 to beat the South Carolina ‘A’ team’s 3:17.87 by a little more than a second.

Men’s Meet Recap

The Virginia Tech men won both relays, along with seven of the 13 individual events during the meet.

They started with the top time in the men’s 200 medley relay with their team of Andy Roose (22.01), Eli Martin (24.14), William Hayon (20.69), and Brendan Whitfield (18.77) swimming 1:25.61.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Whitfield (42.10), Hayon (43.87), Tanish George Mathew (43.63), and Javier Nunez (43.31) swam 2:52.91 to come in almost two seconds ahead of South Carolina’s ‘A’ team that swam 2:54.70.

Whitfield won two individual events during the meet, taking the top time in the 200 free at 1:33.91 to come in about a second ahead of Pierre Largeron‘s 1:34.73.

In the 100 free, he swam 42.06 to touch two seconds ahead of Quinn Buck‘s 2nd place time of 44.19 for South Carolina.

Eli Martin also won two events for the Hokies, sweeping the breaststroke events with the top 100 time of 52.60 and the top 200 time of 1:53.61. His 100 breast was a new personal best time, dropping from the 52.90 he swam at the NC State Invite in November.

Their other two individual swimming event wins came in the 200 back, with Levente Balogh swimming 1:42.10 to touch six tenths ahead of Andy Roose‘s 1:42.73, and in the 200 IM, with Clem Camacho swimming 1:46.76 to win the event by more than a second over Martin. Camacho’s swim was a new personal best dropping from the 1:47.10 he swam at the NC State Invite, marking his first ever time under 1:47 in the event.

Their final event win came in the men’s 1 meter diving where Rocky Ramsland scored 338.10 to beat Charles Bayer‘s 330.30 by just under eight points.

South Carolina won six of the 13 events, including one of the diving events.

Their first win of the meet came from Connor Fry‘s top time in the men’s 1000 freestyle with the 8:59.74 he swam to win by more than four seconds.

The Gamecocks also won the men’s 500 freestyle with Pierre Largeron‘s 4:19.86 beating Virginia Tech’s Jakub Poliacik, who swam 4:20.69, by almost a second. Fry finished 4th in 4:26.23.

The men’s 100 backstroke went to Ryan Hufford‘s 47.05, which was just eight hundredths faster than Balogh’s 47.13.

Gage Hulbert won the men’s 200 fly in 1:45.38, nearly two tenths faster than Carl Bloebaum‘s 1:45.56 for the Hokies in 2nd overall.

Grad Student Eldor Usmonov was the final individual event swimming winner, taking the top time in the men’s 100 fly at 46.67.

The 3 meter diving event was won by senior Charley Bayer, who scored 351.15 to come in more than 10 points ahead of Virginia Tech’s Nathan Cox, who scored 340.05.
