The Arizona Diamondbacks traded outfielder Jake McCarthy to the Colorado Rockies for right-handed pitching prospect Josh Grosz on Saturday.
Reports from earlier this offseason indicated the Diamondbacks were likely to move on from one of McCarthy or Alek Thomas with a left-handed surplus in the outfield.
With Arizona taking superstar second baseman Ketel Marte off the trade market on Friday, the club made its next move with spring training a month away.
Grosz is not on the 40-man roster, so Arizona cleared a spot with this move, as well.

Grosz is a 23-year-old starting pitcher whom the New York Yankees drafted in 2023 out of East Carolina. New York traded the 6-foot-4 hurler to Colorado in 2025 for third baseman Ryan McMahon.
He made his Double-A debut in 2024 but stuck to High-A last season, throwing 125.1 innings with a 4.67 ERA, 135 strikeouts and 55 walks.
Grosz was the No. 20 prospect in Colorado’s farm system, ranked by MLB Pipeline.
Grosz mixes an upright delivery with a low three-quarters arm slot. He has fringy control and command, and his fastball is his lone better-than-average offering. He has the ceiling of a back-of-the-rotation starter and could end up as a multi-inning reliever.

Diamondbacks trade Jake McCarthy
McCarthy has been with the Diamondbacks’ organization since being drafted No. 39 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. Since then, he’s played 431 games with the ballclub and is seventh in team history with 83 stolen bases.
He is one of only three players in team history with three 23-steal seasons along with Tony Womack and Corbin Carroll.
The 28-year-old plays with an all-out style on the bases and defense as an extremely fast and versatile player.
His 2025 season did not live up to expectations after he turned in a very good 2024 with a .285/.349/.400 batting line and 25 steals. He won the everyday center field job in the second half and was named a Gold Glove finalist that year.
He opened the 2025 campaign in an 0-for-24 slump, however, and was optioned to Triple-A Reno on April 21.
The D-backs did not recall him until June 24, and since then he’s worked a more reasonable but underwhelming .674 OPS.
McCarthy and Thomas have been thrown into trade rumors over the past couple years as they’ve jockeyed for playing time as left-handed outfielders without a consistently reliable bat.
McCarthy came up as a potential trade target for Houston at the trade deadline in a report from The Athletic.
The D-backs and McCarthy avoided arbitration on Thursday with a $1.53 million deal. He is out of minor league options and has two more arbitration-eligible seasons after 2026 before hitting free agency.
The Diamondbacks have an uncertain outlook in the outfield around All-Star Corbin Carroll. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tore his ACL in September, opening up left field.
Thomas, Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa are all options on the 40-man roster, while infielders Jordan Lawlar and Blaze Alexander have received outfield reps, as well. Lawlar made his center field debut in the Dominican Winter League.
The Diamondbacks still have a lot of work to do this offseason with bullpen needs and questions at first base, outfield and starting pitching depth.
