MILPITAS — Milpitas boys basketball is still pretty good.
The Trojans were historically excellent a year ago, when they went 24-5 and finished third in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs, also becoming the first public school to win a game against a West Catholic Athletic League team in CCS Open pool play.
Milpitas beat Bellarmine to break that streak and later beat Serra to further make a historic splash in the CCS Open pool.
This year, Milpitas lost several key players from that team, including star Jacob Wrencher, the son of coach Champ Wrencher.
But this season’s version of the Trojans can still get it done. The latest example came on Friday night against Los Gatos, when Milpitas led by as many as 15 points and executed key plays down the stretch to survive a late Los Gatos surge and win 58-52.

(Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group)“I didn’t know it’d be at this level,” coach Wrencher said. “I thought we’d be a really scrappy team, and we’d lose some close games and compete really well, we’d still be .500. But I didn’t think we’d beat some of the people that we’ve beaten and be on this run. So I’m a little surprised.
“The plan was to shoot for 17 wins (since) you lose that many people. But you got a second-leading scorer back, and you got a pretty good sophomore returning. We were thinking this could be OK, but we’ll have a lot of people giving us their best shot. But these guys, they’ve been taking the best shots and they’ve been counterpunching like crazy. So it’s fun to watch.”
Milpitas improved to 13-1 and 2-0 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s De Anza Division behind 16 points from Pranavram Krishnan – the super sophomore Wrencher referred to, now a junior – and 13 from Dylan Nguyen.
Los Gatos (11-4, 2-1) got 17 points from Zach Otoupal and 11 apiece from Milos Grabovac and Dionysis Maroudas as the Wildcats made things interesting down the stretch.

So really proud of the guys for fighting back and making it a game.
“That’s what we talked about. Let’s do what we can do. We tried a bunch of different stuff. Some of it worked, some of it didn’t. But they’re really good, and they got a couple really, really good guys.”

The night of upsets continued in the EBAL as Monte Vista upset Granada at home in Danville.
A slow offensive start – Granada led 6-5 after a quarter – gave away to a back-and-forth contest. Monte Vista (11-6, 1-0) took a 20-17 lead into the halftime break, but Granada (12-4, 0-1) responded with a third-quarter surge to lead 39-32 heading into the final period.
But Monte Vista had the last laugh, outscoring the visitors 19-5 in the final frame.
Max Nishikawa led all scorers with 23 points for Monte Vista, including nine in the fourth quarter. Brandon Hahn led Granada with 22 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

No. 2 San Ramon Valley 58, No. 3 Carondelet 48
In an effort that coach John Cristiano called a “stinker game for SRV but a good win on the road,” San Ramon Valley made the short trip to Concord and took care of business against Carondelet to pick up a key win in EBAL play.
Cristiano noted that the Wolves shot just 2 of 16 from 3-point range in the first half – “awful” and well below their season average of about 48% – but turned things around offensively in the second.
