Chicago Sports Equinox, Everybody’s Sick, Prospects in Action, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

I want to take a quick second to give Drew Commesso some credit. I wrote this in the comments on the game story from last night, but it bears repeating. On Thursday, the Blackhawks traded Laurent Brossoit to San Jose. Commesso went to bed back on top of the depth chart in Rockford, planning for a home start against the Chicago Wolves.

Commesso woke up on a game day for the IceHogs and, by lunchtime, found himself driving to Chicago. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said Spencer Knight got sick very late in the afternoon, which dropped the NHL game into Commesso’s lap. So no morning skate, extremely rushed prep work/meetings when he got to Chicago, and… Alex Ovechkin is on the other end with a team that got beat on their home ice six days ago by the Blackhawks.

I give Commesso a lot of credit for what he was able to do last night. The guys in front of him were sick and flat and, frankly, made too many mistakes. The game was choppy and there really wasn’t a lot of rhythm. He tried in some nightmare circumstances.

After the game last night, Blashill — was wasn’t 100 percent healthy in his own right — said he really didn’t know what his goalie situation is going to be for Nashville. The team isn’t flying the EBUG to Nashville. So… TBD in net for tonight. Stay tuned. Blashill did say Ilya Mikheyev will be on the charter. No commitment that he would play, however. Blashill also confirmed last night that Connor Bedard will probably not take a lot of faceoffs for the foreseeable future. Good read here from Ben Pope on how the Blackhawks evolved while Bedard was out of the lineup.

In retrospect, the Blackhawks ended up becoming a better team during Connor Bedard's absence. They developed more of an O-zone identity, they found more depth scoring, they learned Oliver Moore thrives at center, etc.New story: t.co/F7mHCtiBya

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 9, 2026 The list of guests in the press box for last night’s game was short… but the job titles were impressive. We had a VP of Hockey Ops, an Assistant GM, a Director of Pro Scouting and a Scouting Coordinator. I point these things out because there’s some significance. Like there was the last time I mentioned this… about seven hours before the Hawks traded Brossoit and Nolan Allan on Thursday. Good read here from Scott Powers on Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert. His season hasn’t been what anyone expected or hoped for when he transferred from North Dakota — where he was the NCHC Rookie of the Year last season — to Boston University. Injuries have been a big factor in his struggles. Now, he’s healthy and ready for a big second half. He’ll have a new teammate this weekend. More than that enormous addition a little later in our bullets.

Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert didn’t have the first half of the season he was hoping for at BU. But now healthy, he’s ready to go.Might that springboard him into signing with the Blackhawks? That and more t.co/TTpdLiwHHb

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) January 9, 2026 Last night, Boisvert had an assist on Boston University’s first goal against Václav Nestrašil and UMass. BU won the game 1-0. Staying in the college ranks, the two Blackhawks prospects in the Providence lineup were busy setting up their teammates. Julius Sumpf had three assists and John Mustard had one in a blowout 6-1 win over Maine. In the OHL last, the first two goals of the game for Brantford came from their Blackhawks prospects. Marek Vanacker opened the scoring in the second period. (Vanacker also had an assist on Brantford’s third goal of the period.)

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) January 10, 2026 Jack Pridham had an assist on Kitchener’s second goal last night. He added a second assist on Kitchener’s final goal in a 4-2 win. In the WHL, Nathan Behm scored his 23rd of the year for Kamloops.

Find somewhere with multiple screens, beverage and food options and a comfortable chair. We’re getting after it tonight, Chicago! Just because today is a Chicago Sports Equinox doesn’t exclude other relevant games to keep an eye on as Blackhawks fans! There’s packed schedule for prospects tonight as well! Kotkaniemi will turn 26 in July and his contract has four years remaining at $4.82M AAV.  Really good read from Mike Koreen at Sportsnet on how the NCAA rule changes impacted the trade deadline across the CHL.

The annual trade deadlines in the WHL, OHL and QMJHL this week produced even more blockbuster deals than usual.

With the statuses of players so unclear because of the possibility of moves to the NCAA, CHL teams with a shot to win in the current season have to feel an extra amount of pressure to go all in.

The NHL also wants to have one 19-year-old per team be eligible for the AHL starting next season as part of its new CBA, so the days of building up gradually to a strong team of 19-year-olds in the CHL just might be over.

This is a good read and relevant to the link above regarding the CHL-NCAA situation. Tynan Lawrence, a top prospect in the 2026 NHL Draft — who some (including me) feel fits the Blackhawks’ profile very well — wrote about his decision to make the move to Boston University in the middle of the season.
