El Dorado boys basketball holds off furious rally at the end by Sonora ...Middle East

PLACENTIA — The El Dorado boys basketball team held Sonora’s big guns in check long enough to take a sizable lead into the fourth quarter of a key Freeway League game Friday at El Dorado High School.

Trailing by 19 at the start of the final quarter, Sonora, led by standout Tyler Holmquist, made a furious run and got within five with 90 seconds remaining, but the Golden Hawks, who have their own standouts, put the game away down the stretch to defeat the Raiders 69-60.

The Golden Hawks (19-2, 3-0) and the Raiders (16-7, 2-1) came into the contest ranked No. 15 and 18, respectively, in Orange County.

“When you play (Sonora coach Mike Murphy) … He’s won 700 games,” El Dorado coach Ryan Mounce said. “His teams are very well coached. Tyler (Holmquist) and Jaden (Barnes) are extremely good players. But we’ve built this team over the last year and a half. I’ve got five or six guys who can go for 20.”

Elias Rodarte scored 21 points and Noah Barker scored 19 to lead the Hawks.

Rodarte hit three 3-pointers, including two that were well beyond the 3-point arc. The first of those shots came early in the third and the second came late in the quarter to put the Hawks ahead, 45-33.

“On one of them, we got the offensive rebound and they kicked it out to me,” Rodarte said. “I was kind of just feeling it. I was kind of open. I shot it. It felt good. I just feel confident shooting, especially since we work on it in practice. We work on long shots, short shots, we do everything in practice. Just good variants of different shots.”

The Hawks led by 21 early in the fourth when Holmquist led a 19-11 run to make the contest close.

The 6-foot-3 senior scored the Raiders’ first 11 points of the quarter, including nine on 3-pointers.

Holmquist then made a steal, drove the length of the court and passed off Luca Pirona, who scored on a layup to get the Raiders to within nine.

Barnes scored on two consecutive possessions to make it a five-point game with one minute, 16 seconds remaining.

The Hawks stayed composed, hitting four of six free throws and shutting out the Raiders over the final minute.

“They punched us in the mouth coming out of halftime,” Holmquist said. “We didn’t do a good job of responding. I want to win every game. It’s my senior year, so I want to go down swinging and do whatever I can to help the team get back in it. Credit to them. They played a great game.”

The teams will face off again Jan. 27 at Sonora in the second-to-last game of the regular season.
