Nick Saban is arguably the greatest college football coach of all-time, and he might even be the best football coach at any level who’s ever lived.
But that doesn’t mean he’s perfect or was a saint during all his years in coaching, including those 6 national championships at Alabama. Now, Saban is a college football analyst at ESPN and was on hand with the College GameDay crew during the leadup to Friday night’s Indiana-Oregon College Football Playoff semifinal.
That’s when Saban got brutally honest — and was funny while doing it. While ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel was reporting on the availability of some Oregon players in the leadup to kickoff in Atlanta, Saban pulled off 2 things at the very same time that were revealing and humorous. First, he mispronounced Thamel’s last name, calling him “Hamel” instead of “Thamel.”
That would’ve been enough of a reason to laugh at the coach who used to be quite serious on the sideline. But there was more from Saban in this moment. He also revealed that he might have, well, you know, told some white lies to “Thamel” regarding injuries, who would be playing and who wouldn’t be playing on that particular day.
“I have a question though. Does Pete Hamel know how many sins I committed telling him fibs about who was gonna play?” Nick Saban said.

Once again, the living coaching legend managed to be the center of attention, only this time it had nothing to do with actual football, just those injuries that Saban used to manipulate in the leadup to his own games.
