Weld County Commissioner Scott James will serve as the new chairman for the Board of County Commissioners after a unanimous vote Monday.
“I was first chair in 2022, and now I am again here in 2026. It is an honor to be selected as chair,” James said. “But by and large, I continue to be 20% of the Board of County Commissioners and acting in that role. I just happen to be the guy who holds the gavel for a year.”
Commissioner Jason Maxey was elected to serve as the chair pro-tem, also unanimously.
The county will focus on several projects in 2026, prioritizing the new Weld County Judicial Center in downtown Greeley. The county hopes to break ground in November and is in the process of hiring a designer, James said.
The Weld County Home Rule Charter requires the board to select the chair and chair pro-tem at the start of the commissioners’ first meeting each year. The commissioner chair is responsible for presiding over Board of Commissioners meetings and serves as the primary point of contact for major county departments, including the county attorney, county finances and county human resources.
The commissioners have an established rotation for determining the chair. Commissioner Perry Buck, the former chair, said it was an honor to serve and a wonderful experience, and wished James well in his “term with the gavel.”
“Serving as the chair was just a wonderful learning experience. It was a wonderful opportunity. Nothing’s better,” Buck said. “I feel better now that I’ve passed the gavel, though. I think Commissioner Scott James will do a great job.”
