The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for a large portion of the Chicago area Thursday as thunderstorms with heavy rainfall move through the region.
The warning was issued around 8 p.m. and runs through 10 p.m. Thursday.
The alert covers central Cook, DuPage, and northwestern Will counties.
Thunderstorms with rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were expected to move into areas that had previously received heavy rainfall, NWS reported. Flood impacts will worsen rapidly after the onset of rainfall.
Areas that could experience flash flooding included Chicago, Naperville, Cicero, Elmhurst, Lombard, Romeoville and Plainfield, among others, according to NWS.
“Persons along creeks, drainage ditches, and other waterways should take immediate precautions to protect life and property,” NWS warned. “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded areas.”
Half an inch to 1.5 inches had already fallen by the time the alert was issued, NWS said.
