Trump supporters ‘plot’ royal marriage for Barron Trump to secure Greenland ...Middle East

News by : (mercury news) -

Following America’s military intervention in Venezuela to arrest its president, President Donald Trump said in an interview this week that his attention will next focus on acquiring Greenland, the gigantic icebound island northeast of Canada that is surrounded by two very cold oceans.

But to seize control of this island, which is an autonomous territory within the kingdom of Denmark, Trump would not have to deploy an aircraft carrier, fighter jets or Delta Commandos. He could perhaps arrange a strategic marriage between his youngest son, 19-year-old Barron, and Denmark’s Princess Isabella, who turned 18 in April. The princess, in turn, could offer Greenland as a dowry.

So that’s the wild idea that was floated in an X post Wednesday by a MAGA influencer — an idea that has since gone viral and received more than 6 million views as of mid-day Thursday, as the Daily Beast first reported.

“The simple diplomatic solution is Barron Trump marries Princess Isabella of Denmark and Greenland is given to America as dowry payment,” the influencer account Miss White said in the post, which also received more than 138,000 likes and the approval of some prominent Trump supporters.

“The Henry(Etta) Kissinger of our time!” conservative podcaster Megyn Kelly replied, referring to the former United States Secretary of State under Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

The Daily Beast also reported that Pete St. Onge of the Heritage Foundation, which authored Project 2025, also weighed in. “The Habsburg solution,” St. Onge wrote in response to Miss White’s X post. He was referring to the powerful dynasty that was one of Europe’s most powerful and influential royal houses from the 15th to the 20th centuries, famous for expanding its territory through strategic marriages.

Isabella, the second child of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, is second in line of succession to the Danish throne behind her older brother, Christian, Crown Prince of Denmark, the Daily Beast reported. She also is in her final year of Denmark’s version of high school, set to graduate from the Øregård Gymnasium in Copenhagen this summer.

Many engaging in the discussion on Miss White’s X post would say they were only joking around about an arranged royal marriage for Barron Trump. But some took her post seriously and were not amused, with one person writing: “Greenland is not a bargaining chip, Princess Isabella of Denmark is not a pawn, and Barron Trump is not a diplomatic tool. Nations are not exchanged through marriages, this is not the 1400s.”

Critics of Trump might also say one never knows with this president, given that he has a history of putting his children to work for him. These critics also would say that Trump rules like an autocrat, while he and his family have long put on airs of seeing themselves as American royalty.

Meanwhile, the idea of the United States trying to acquire Greenland seemed pretty outlandish until Trump started talking about it when he returned to the White House last year. This week, his White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said on CNN that the United States needs Greenland for strategic purposes in the Arctic region, prompting news reports that suggested that Trump would not need to marry off his son to the Danish princess in order to get ahold of the territory.

The New York Times reported on a little-known agreement between the United States and Denmark, signed during the Cold War, that says that the United States already enjoys sweeping military access in Greenland. While the United States already has one base on the island, the 1951 agreement would allow the U.S. military to “construct, install, maintain, and operate” bases across the island, as well as to “house personnel” and “control landings, takeoffs, anchorages, moorings, movements, and operation of ships, aircraft, and waterborne craft.”

“The U.S. has such a free hand in Greenland that it can pretty much do what it wants,” Mikkel Runge Olesen, a researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Copenhagen, told the New York Times.

“I have a very hard time seeing that the U.S. couldn’t get pretty much everything it wanted,” he said, adding, “if it just asked nicely.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the president has also talked about buying Greenland. However, some estimates put the price tag for the 836,330-square-mile island at hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, as CNBC reported. In any case, Greenland doesn’t want to be bought by anyone, with its prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, saying, “Our country is not for sale.”

It also turns out that the government of Denmark has no authority to sell Greenland and has left it to residents to decide their future, the New York Times also reported. Indeed, the island’s some 57,000 residents have the right to hold a referendum on independence, while a poll last year found that 85% of Greenlanders oppose the idea of an American takeover.

When it comes to the arranged-marriage scheme, Greenland’s legal autonomy would seem to nix the idea of Denmark’s king being able to offer it up as a dowry for his daughter’s hand in marriage to Barron Trump. But that hasn’t stopped the New York University student’s fans from engaging in some fan fiction, such as generating AI photos of him and Princess Isabella on their royal wedding day or images that try to predict what their children could look like.
