There’s an undeniable electricity that pulses through Atlantic City, a vibrant, magnetic energy that intensifies the moment you cross the threshold of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City.

As a frequent traveler and writer, I’m often asked why I remain so captivated by this iconic stretch of the Jersey Shore. I spend many of my summer weekends in Margate City, NJ, just a few miles south, and venturing into Atlantic City from this nearby beach town offers a profound and necessary shift in perspective. It is a seamless transition from the quiet charm of a coastal retreat to an exhilarating atmosphere where nostalgic Boardwalk heritage meets high-octane modern luxury. Nowhere is that sophisticated balance more perfectly struck than at the Hard Rock, making it an essential destination for those seeking the ultimate shore, foodie or gaming experience in Atlantic City from nearby beach town offers a profound and necessary shift in perspective. Because it is just an hour from Philadelphia and two hours from New York City, this vibrant city is an accessible, year-round destination that is perfect for a quick getaway.

Recently, I had a mission at the Hard Rock. I wasn’t just there for the world-class music memorabilia or the high-energy gaming floor at Hard Rock. I was there to dine at Kuro, the Japanese craft kitchen that has recently achieved a rare feat: being named the number one hotel restaurant in the country by USA TODAY 10Best for two consecutive years. Accompanied by my husband and son, I wanted to see if the reality matched the accolades.

A Legacy of Excellence

The buzz surrounding Kuro is inextricably linked to the restaurant’s dedicated culinary team led by Executive Chef Leslie Daniel. In the world of high-stakes hospitality, maintaining the top spot for a second year in a row is no small task, yet the pride the Hard Rock staff takes in this achievement is palpable.

The moment we stepped into the restaurant, the decor set the tone. Kuro is designed to be an immersive experience, blending contemporary aesthetics with artisanal touches that feel both sophisticated and welcoming. The lighting is subdued, the atmosphere intimate yet charged with the kinetic energy of the nearby casino floor. It is the kind of place that feels like a destination within a destination. You can see the bustling open kitchen from almost every seat in the restaurant.

The Culinary Journey: From Presentation to Palate

We began our evening with a round of curated cocktails and a selection of appetizers that immediately signaled the kitchen’s technical prowess. Notably, the menu features standout cocktails like the sweet cocktail, Shi, made with blackberry jam-infused tequila, ginger, and pineapple and the salty Pinku, perfectly balanced with vodka, mezcal, watermelon, lime, and ichimi salt. Kuro’s menu is a masterclass in using locally sourced ingredients alongside premium items imported directly from Japan. Chef Leslie, as he’s known,  has designed the menu with sharing in mind, focusing on complex, balanced flavors that encourage everyone at the table to try a bit of everything. We shared the ribeye and chicken skewers, Wagyu tacos, several types of superb sushi, and also enjoyed Miso soup and steamed edamame.

As the evening progressed, the service remained impeccable as it was attentive without being intrusive. Our waiter Tommy was a star. The sheer variety on the menu is impressive, ranging from premium sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls to more indulgent options like A5 Japanese Wagyu Beef and smoky Robata Charcoal Grill skewers. For the main course, my husband devoured the Wagyu steak entree, our son ordered more yellowtail and tuna sushi, and I chose the salmon which was delicate and expertly prepared. What I particularly appreciated was how thoughtful the kitchen was with our dietary needs. Plus, Kuro boasts a great selection of gluten-free and vegan options, ensuring everyone feels accommodated.

Why the Awards are Earned, Not Just Given

It’s easy for a restaurant to rest on its laurels once it hits the top of a list, but Kuro seems to use its number one ranking as a baseline rather than a ceiling. The experience reminded me why I love the Hard Rock AC so much. It isn’t just the vast array of slot machines and diverse table games; it’s the commitment to quality across every dimension. Kuro is part of a standout restaurant scene at Hard Rock, which also includes the refined Council Oak Steaks & Seafood and the classic Italian gem, Il Mulino.

Atlantic City is a town of big wins, and a meal at Kuro feels like exactly that. Whether you are visiting for the non-stop live entertainment at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena or simply strolling the legendary boardwalk, Kuro provides a culinary anchor that justifies every bit of its national fame.

Sometimes, the award winners truly do deserve the honors. Kuro didn’t just meet our expectations based on its USA TODAY 10Best status, it exceeded them. For anyone looking to experience the absolute best of what Atlantic City has to offer, a reservation at this Japanese powerhouse is not just recommended; it’s essential. I know I’ll be back soon, as the entire Hard Rock experience was truly amazing.

Planning Your Visit to Kuro:
