I hope Colston Loveland has room to add more hardwarde to his trophy case.
The Chicago Bears rookie tight end has been named the NFL’s Rookie of the Week for his efforts in the team’s Week 18 game against the Detroit Lions:

— NFL (@NFL) January 8, 2026Sure, the Bears lost that game. But it wasn’t for a lack of trying from tight end Colston Loveland. The first first-round pick of the Ben Johnson era came through with a 91 receiving yards, a career-best 10 catches, and a touchdown in the regular-season finale. Loveland’s touchdown (and the two-point conversion that followed from fellow tight end Cole Kmet) helped erase what was, at one point, a 16-0 deficit. It stinks that the big game came in a loss, but I love that Loveland is on a roll going into the playoffs.
Colston Loveland is the NFL’s Rookie of the Week
This has been quite the first season as a pro for Colston Loveland.
The University of Michigan product finished the year with 58 receptions and 713 receiving yards, both of which led the team. Loveland’s 82 targets were the third most on the squad behind team-leader Rome Odunze (90) and runner-up DJ Moore (85). The rookie also finished the year as Pro Football Focus’ sixth-highest-graded tight end (81.1) with the third-best receiving grade (83.3) among players at his position. Loveland’s run-blocking grade wasn’t too bad, either. The 68.6 mark was the 16th best among the 86 tight ends who played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard.
ICYMI: Colston Loveland Earned the Best Bears Player Grade in Week 18
Seeing how Loveland ended his rookie year serves as a reminder of how much things can change during a season. If you’ll recall, Loveland had a slow start to his rookie campaign — and it came after an offseason in which he was limited as he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery after his college playing career came to an end. But once Loveland got going, he took off. And it has been wonderful to watch.
David Banks-Imagn ImagesWhat’s next for Colston Loveland and the Bears is a playoff showdown against the Green Bay Packers. Loveland grabbed four catches for 29 yards and a touchdown in the first meeting between the teams at Lambeau Field. In the rematch at Soldier Field, he came up with three catches and 30 receiving yards. Green Bay’s defense has been stingy against tight ends for most of the season. Heck, Loveland is the only tight end to score a touchdown against the Packers since Week 8. Nevertheless, I think Loveland still figures to be a huge part of the game plan against Green Bay this week.
Even with Rome Odunze set to return and DJ Moore expected to play (despite being on the injury report) in Saturday’s rubber match against the Packers, Colston Loveland should still get a fair share of looks. Firstly, because his connection with Caleb Williams is undeniable. The Bears quarterback has a 123.6 passer rating when throwing to the rookie tight end. But also, because Loveland has so much positional versatility that he could be a matchup nightmare for what looks to be a woeful group of Packers cornerbacks.

In the end, I look forward to seeing what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has up his sleeve in his first playoff game as a head coach. I don’t think anything is off the table. And I fully expect Colston Loveland to make some big-time plays when the dust settles at Soldier Field.
