John Harbaugh instantly became the biggest name on the market when the Baltimore Ravens fired him Tuesday — but teams hoping to move quickly will need patience.
John Harbaugh Hits Reset Before Entering Coaching Carousel
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Harbaugh has informed interested clubs that he plans to take time to reflect and map out his next steps before beginning interviews sometime next week. The pause hasn’t cooled interest. At 63, Harbaugh leaves Baltimore after an 18-year run that included a Super Bowl title, four AFC Championship Game appearances, and just three losing seasons, making his availability a rare development in a hiring cycle that already includes eight head-coaching vacancies.
Speculation has quickly connected Harbaugh to the New York Giants, while the Miami Dolphins also loom as a team to monitor after firing Mike McDaniel on Thursday. Miami has not yet requested a formal interview, but one of its GM finalists, Chad Alexander, has deep ties to Harbaugh, having spent 20 years with the Ravens. Alexander now serves as assistant GM with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he overlapped extensively with Harbaugh — whose brother, Jim Harbaugh, remains confident John will land quickly.
Jessica Rapfogel-USA TODAY SportsBeyond Baltimore, openings currently exist with the Giants, Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals. While assistant coaches must initially interview virtually, that restriction doesn’t apply to out-of-work candidates — a group that includes Harbaugh, recently fired coaches Mike McDaniel, Kevin Stefanski, and Raheem Morris, and former head coaches like Mike McCarthy and Jason Garrett. Morris has already begun the process, meeting with Giants officials Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, several assistants are drawing heavy interest, including Vance Joseph, Anthony Weaver, Matt Nagy, Lou Anarumo, and Klint Kubiak. Still, Harbaugh’s résumé — sustained success, postseason credibility, and locker-room command — separates him from nearly every other candidate. He may be taking a breath now, but once Harbaugh enters the process, the entire hiring cycle is likely to bend around him.
Buccaneers Fire OC Josh Grizzard
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made their first significant offseason moves on the coaching staff, firing offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard and quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis. Grizzard, 35, joined Tampa Bay in 2024 as pass game coordinator before being promoted last January to replace Liam Coen, who departed to become head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His dismissal effectively ends the Buccaneers’ recent trend of offensive coordinators using Tampa Bay as a springboard to head-coaching jobs — a pipeline that also included Dave Canales, who is now with the Carolina Panthers.
The move comes after an 8-9 season in which Tampa Bay missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019, losing a three-way tiebreaker in the NFC South. Offensively, the results were uneven. The Buccaneers finished 21st in yards per game (320.4) and 18th in scoring (22.4 points per game). Quarterback Baker Mayfield looked like an early MVP candidate when the Bucs opened 5–1, but the season ultimately became his least productive since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2023. Mayfield completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Jim Dedmon-Imagn ImagesWhile Grizzard is out, head coach Todd Bowles is staying put. Bowles, 62, will return for a fifth season after going 35–33 over four years and winning three straight NFC South titles. Bowles acknowledged earlier this week that staff changes were likely, and Grizzard’s departure appears to be the first step in that process.
“All I can do is coach and be myself,” Bowles said Monday. “I’ve earned the chance. I won three straight division titles. That says a lot… The coach’s problem is to make the team better. That’s all I’m looking forward to.”
With Bowles retained and the offensive coordinator role now open, Tampa Bay enters the offseason facing a familiar question: how to reignite an offense capable of capitalizing on a veteran roster before the window narrows further.
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY SportsBrowns Emerge as Potential Landing Spot for Mike McDaniel
The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel on Thursday, instantly making him one of the most intriguing offensive minds available in this coaching cycle.
While McDaniel is expected to draw heavy interest as an offensive coordinator, there’s also a real possibility he lands another head-coaching job sooner rather than later. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Cleveland Browns should be interested in McDaniel as a candidate for their head coaching vacancy.
The connection isn’t new. McDaniel served as Cleveland’s wide receivers coach in 2014 under then-head coach Mike Pettine, when Kyle Shanahan was the Browns’ offensive coordinator. When Shanahan left Cleveland, McDaniel followed him first to Atlanta and later to San Francisco, where his offensive reputation continued to grow.
McDaniel’s tenure in Miami ended after a 7-10 season, closing a three-year run in which he went 35-33 in the regular season and 0-2 in the playoffs.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Vikings DC Brian Flores plans to interview with the Baltimore Ravens for their head coaching vacancy. SI’s Albert Breer believes that the interview will take place next week. Before Flores’ interview with the Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs OC Matt Nagy will meet with the Ravens over the weekend, according to multiple reports. Nagy has prior head-coaching experience with the Chicago Bears from 2018-2021. Green Bay Packers DC Jeff Hafley and Pittsburgh Steelers OC Arthur Smith are among the names reportedly requested for interviews with the Tennessee Titans. With the Packers and Steelers in the playoffs, both interviews would have to take place next week, at the earliest. Smith previously served as the OC in Tennessee before being hired as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. Smith spent 10 seasons in Tennessee. Former Giants linebacker and Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce and recently fired Falcons head coach Raheem Morris are both scheduled to interview with New York for their head coaching vacancy. Speaking of recently fired head coaches getting right back into the mix, Kevin Stefanski is expected to interview with the Raiders today. The Raiders also plan to interview Broncos DC Vance Joseph and OC Davis Webb today. Raiders related: Maxx Crosby underwent surgery to repair a torn MCL on Wednesday.
