Igor Thiago’s brace against Sunderland took him to 16 league goals, a new record for a Brazilian in a single Premier League season. But who did he dethrone to get there?
Igor Thiago scored twice as Brentford cruised to a 3-0 home victory over Sunderland in the Premier League on Wednesday night. The win lifted Keith Andrews’ side into fifth place, a position that was enough to secure Champions League qualification last season.
The high-flying Bees are in brilliant form, winning four of their last six league matches and drawing the other two, collecting 14 points in the process. Only Arsenal have picked up more over the same period (15).
After a difficult summer that saw them lose their manager and two star players in Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, many predicted Brentford would struggle this season. Instead, they find themselves firmly in the conversation for European qualification.
At the heart of that charge is Thiago. After a frustrating, injury-hit first season in England, the Brazilian striker has been outstanding in his second. We covered his campaign to date in deeper detail earlier this week (linked below), but his brace on Wednesday night added another milestone to an already impressive season.

Premier LeagueHow Igor Thiago Has Filled the Void Left by Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa
1 day ago David SegarThose two goals took Thiago to 16 for the term and, in the process, saw him break a perhaps surprising record: he’s now scored the most goals by a Brazilian in a single Premier League season.
The previous record had sat at 15 goals and was jointly held by Roberto Firmino (2017-18), Matheus Cunha (2024-25) and Gabriel Martinelli (2022-23). Given the calibre of Brazilians to have graced the Premier League, that’s a massive achievement. And with 17 games left to play, it could get even better.
Just 15 Brazilian players have reached double figures for goals in a Premier League season. Firmino leads the way, having done so five times, while Richarlison has managed it on four occasions.
The Opta supercomputer currently gives Brentford a 10.5% chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, which would be a remarkable achievement. Their most likely finishing position according to the model is seventh, which could still be enough to secure European football depending on how the qualification places fall.
If that is where Brentford do indeed finish, and Thiago keeps up his scoring efforts, he could join the list of the below players to hit 20+ goals in a Premier League season for a team who finish outside the top six. He would become the most recent player to do so since former Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Harry Kane (both in 2022-23).
Firmino remains the highest-scoring Brazilian in Premier League history with 82 goals, followed closely by Gabriel Jesus (77) and Richarlison (71). Thiago has a long way to go to even get close to those totals, but in what is effectively his first fully fit season in England, he has made a superb start.
