Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson has declared for the NFL draft and will forgo his final year of eligibility after just one season as the team’s starter.
Simpson threw for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in 2025. He led Alabama to an SEC championship appearance, a College Football Playoff first round win at Oklahoma and a Rose Bowl berth.
He has been picked in the first round of NFL mock drafts and is the No. 3 quarterback on ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s “big board.”
Despite having opportunities to leave Alabama, Simpson opted to stay in Tuscaloosa after head coach Nick Saban retired. Simpson added that there was temptation to find an easier path to the field during his journey.
“But when you choose Alabama football, there’s a responsibility and a pride that comes with it,” Simpson said. “It’s something you feel deep down. It’s not a choice to stay at Alabama. You just are Alabama, or you’re not.”
Simpson will leave Alabama with an 11-4 record as a starter. He helped rattle off wins against four straight ranked opponents — including a 24-21 win over Georgia in Athens — and led the team to first place in the SEC regular season standings.
“It wasn’t all perfect, and it didn’t have to be, but every moment had meaning, and I gave Alabama my all,” Simpson said. “And I got so much more in return. Coach Saban was right — it was all worth it.”
After fielding two Saban-era quarterbacks in his first two seasons at the helm, head coach Kalen DeBoer’s next starting quarterback will be one he recruited to Tuscaloosa.
It is unclear if redshirt junior Austin Mack — who took over for an injured Simpson in the Rose Bowl — will stay in Tuscaloosa, after he was noncommittal to returning to Alabama. The quarterback competition this spring will at least contain redshirt freshman and former 5-star Keelon Russell, who previously confirmed his plans to return.
