UNC Bears bobblehead to be released on National Bobblehead Day  ...Saudi Arabia

There’s UNC Bears beer, UNC Bears bourbon so why not a UNC Bears bobblehead?

A new UNC Bears collectible bobblehead will be released Wednesday on National Bobblehead Day.

National Bobblehead Day is celebrated annually Jan. 7 since established in 2015 by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The hall of fame and museum will release about 40 new bobbleheads Wednesday, including one honoring UNC and its mascot Klawz.

The limited-edition Klawz bobblehead will be available to order Wednesday at the hall of fame and museum’s online store via the link bobbleheadhall.com/products/klawz. The 8-inch bobbleheads are $35 plus an $8 shipping charge per order. They are expected to ship in May.

Hall of fame and museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said Tuesday the organization was prompted to offer a UNC Bears bobblehead based on requests.

Sklar said the organization often receives requests for bobbleheads for colleges and universities. These requests sometimes are received with the mention or the appearance of another school.

“I think when we continued to add other Colorado schools like the University of Colorado, Colorado State, Air Force and the University of Denver, people in the region who went to school at Northern Colorado wanted a bobblehead for their school,” Sklar said in an email.

The Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum will produce the Klawz bobblehead. The hall of fame and museum is an official licensee of UNC, meaning it can use university logos.

The hall of fame and museum submitted an application for the bobbleheads with the College Licensing Commission through its portal, according to UNC spokeswoman Deanna Herbert.

UNC is a member of the CLC. The university role with this type of request is to approve any artwork, colors and the licensing, Herbert said. These requests at UNC are handled by marketing and communications department.

Sklar said at other universities, athletic departments might have staff to handle licensing requests — such as the production of a mascot bobblehead.

Sklar said when the hall of fame and museum wants to add a new school, they go into the CLC portal and “click a few boxes.” This process might not always include an interaction with a representative from the school.

“In most cases, it’s all through the portal,” Sklar said.

Bobbleheads were initially introduced for sports teams in the 1960s, Sklar said. The collectibles then saw a resurgence in the late 1990s with online buying at sites such as eBay. Sklar said the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball contributed to the popularity with a release of a Wille Mayes bobblehead in 1999.

Today, for example, Sklar said a Denver Nuggets fan who might never have a chance to get a Nikola Jokic bobblehead at a Nuggets’ game can buy online. A Jokic 2023 NBA Championship bobblehead is available on eBay for $69.99. The seller is located in Milwaukee, according to the listing.

Bobbleheads remain the No. 1 promotional item at professional games and sporting events, Sklar said.

“And there is no decline,” he added. “Teams saw how well the games did (in attendance) and by the early 2000s, Major League Baseball, the NBA and hockey joined in. That sparked them off.”

Sklar’s National Bobblehead Museum hosts more than 10,000 bobbleheads. The museum was founded in 2014 and opened in February 2019.

There is only one bobblehead in the hall of fame, which is in the same building. The honored bobblehead is of Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader with 4,256 in a 24-year career. Rose infamously was never inducted in the National Baseball of Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York because he was banned from baseball in 1989 for betting on games. He died in September 2024. Rose was removed from the permanently ineligible list in May 2025 by baseball commissioner Rob Manfred.

Rose’s bobblehead was inducted into the Milwaukee hall of fame in 2015.

Sklar said the bobbleheads receiving he most attention at the museum is a set of The Beatles from 1964. Among the other popular bobbleheads are: The Flintstones, The Simpsons, The Golden Girls, sports figures and a Jaws bobblehead representing the 1975 summer blockbuster movie.

“People of all ages seem to like The Beatles,” Sklar said. “It depends on what their interests are.”
