Back in October, it was announced that Flueger was taking a temporary leave of absence from his role. What was unknown then and is still unknown is how many episodes Flueger will miss and how that affects Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), who plays his wife and fellow Intelligence Unit team member.

“We pick right back up, and it becomes pretty chaotic, very adrenalized,” she says. “It’s a ticking clock for the team. Can they get [to Bell’s house] quickly enough, and then once they do, can we discover what’s going on with the Bells quick enough to make sure [his granddaughter] Julie’s [Julianna Layne] okay as well?”

“Even though Voight understands being impulsive and understands that she’s very similar to him in a lot of ways, he’s not very happy with that decision and that she put her life at stake and also the case at stake,” Sigan continues. “So, we get to see a lot of that fallout and in the process, learn a lot about her and her past and see that bond between the two of them grow a little closer at the end of the episode as well.”

We will also see more of the game between Voight and Bell, because even though Voight’s putting Bell through an interrogation that saw Bell make one mistake, Bell still thinks he’s the smartest man in any room and wants to continue his cat-and-mouse strategy with the police.

Watching Voigt interact with Imani has been entertaining because of the aforementioned fact that the two characters are very similar in their approach to policing: ask for forgiveness instead of permission. The result of that is that Imani actually makes Voight look like he has more control that previously.

Sigan promises some answers to those questions, as well as how Voight comes to realize what an ally he had in ADA Chapman (Sara Bues), which ended in the Season 12 finale when Voight arranged to have Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy) assassinated by Otero’s son Rennie (Jason Sanchez). Now, Voight has had to find himself a new ADA to work with, who isn’t as pliable.

That said, Sign does share that at some point in time, Chapman, who also had a romantic interest in Voight, could get past it.

Chicago P.D.airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
