Bears-Packers Injury Updates, Caleb on Rome, NFL Coaching News and Rumors, and Other Wednesday Bullets ...Middle East

Happy hump day! Let’s talk about the Bears and som other things happening around the NFL.

Leave it to Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson to share the perfect quote for a turn-the-page Wednesday:

“We’re mentally prepared to play for five more weeks,” Johnson said (h/t Bears Wire). “That’s our intent. How do you do that? You go out and win the first one. … We’re going to go all out for this game, and we’ll worry about the future when the time comes.”

This is the attitude the Bears need to have going into this one. You need to be mentally and physically ready to take on five more weeks of grueling NFL action. But you can’t get there without taking it one game at a time. It has been fun to watch Chicago’s football team transition from an upstart worst-to-first fun story to a team that is serious about playing deep into a chilling winter. The first injury reports for the Green Bay Packers (presented by Patrick) and Chicago Bears (by yours truly) are out. And when it comes to Chicago’s football team, it isn’t as daunting as I thought it would be. Wide receiver Rome Odunze remains listed limited with a foot injury. Cornerback Kyler Gordon was also limited in his first walk-through after being designated to return from injured reserve. Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson landing in concussion protocol isn’t ideal, so I am keeping an eye on his status as the week goes on.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams on Rome Odunze returning to the lineup (via the Trib’s Sean Hammond): “When he went down (in warm ups before the Browns game), texted him after the game and said, ‘I got you, and we’ll get to the playoffs and we’ll handle business when you come back, but I need you back healthy and ready to go.’” Rome Odunze celebrates a first down against the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images It was nice to see QB1 connect with rookies Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland during Odunze’s absence. But getting someone with Rome’s skill and upside would bolster the offense. I love this Caleb Williams quote about his faith in himself and his surroundings heading into his first playoff game: “I think it’s just the trust I have in myself, the belief in myself. A little bit of that arrogant confidence on the football field. And then the trust and belief and who I have protecting me, the trust and belief in who I have calling the game and then the trust and belief in who I have on the outside and in the backfield.” (Marquee) Updates on the Packers side:

Some Packers updates from Matt LaFleur:Full confidence in Jordan Love, who "looked good" last week in practice. Malik Willis expected to be available as QB2. Josh Jacobs in "great spirits."Zach Tom expected to play.Dontayvion Wicks still in protocol but will practice.

— Zach Kruse (@zachkruse2) January 6, 2026 If Zach Tom is healthy for Saturday’s game, it sets up a premier matchup between Green Bay’s starting right tackle and Chicago’s best pass rusher, Montez Sweat, who has primarly lined up to face right tackles this season. Awkward: Bears tight end Cole Kmet has a sister who is dating a Green Bay Packers player. The Tribune’s Sean Hammond dives into this family affair ahead of the NFL’s longest running rivalry. I’m so glad the Bears aren’t in the market for a head coach. Aren’t you? The Washington Commanders giving the boot to offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury *AND* defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. is a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NFL. At this time last year, the Commanders were the darling story of a franchise climbing out of the cellar and into prosperity. Bears fans, on-lookers, and pundits saw Washington as the model of what Chicago’s football team should have been. But here we are, one year later, and the franchise is in scramble mode looking for quick and decisive changes that will get things back on the right track. John Harbaugh is the most accomplished coaching candidate available in this cycle. The Baltimore Ravens is the best landing spot for a new coach. Isn’t it weird that they parted ways on Tuesday? NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero shares some possible candidates for the Baltimore opening:

Who could be the Ravens’ next coach? And where could John Harbaugh end up? From our breaking news coverage on @nflnetwork: pic.twitter.com/dSe0TGEiyC

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 6, 2026 Klint Kubiak (Seahawks OC), Joe Brady (Bills OC), Matt Nagy (Chiefs OC), and Jesse Minter (Chargers DC) come up as possible fits for the Ravens. It’ll be fascinating to see how this one plays out. The New York Giants list of coaching candidates continues to grow with Mike McCarthy getting lined up for an interview. McCarthy interviewed for the Bears gig last year and was viewed as a decent candidate. I’m glad the Bears didn’t have to go down that road. But more than that, I’m happy that his departure from Dallas led to Al Harris joining Ben Johnson’s staff coaching defensive backs. I’d bet a dollar to a donut that Harris came up in a conversation between McCarthy and the powers that be at Halas Hall. Could an old friend find a new home as a second-chance head coach? In addition to possible interest from the Ravens, former Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy has interviews lined up with the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, and Tennessee Titans:

The Raiders and Cardinals have requested interviews with Chiefs OC Matt Nagy for their head coaching jobs, sources tell The Insiders. Nagy is now set to interview with Tennessee and Las Vegas on Thursday and Arizona on Friday. A busy week. pic.twitter.com/RghKOTYoqn
