New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall moved quickly in assembling his first UF coaching staff, and a wave of hires was formally announced on Tuesday. Among the new hires is a Georgia Tech assistant who worked closely with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
Like Faulkner, Trent McKnight is making the move from Atlanta to Gainesville. On Tuesday, McKnight was announced as the new passing game coordinator and inside wide receivers coach.
“Coach McKnight fits the bill on what we need on our offensive staff,” Sumrall said via a Florida release. “He has a ton of experience and is widely respected in college football for the job he does with his players. His relationship with Coach Faulkner will also benefit not only the staff, but our players.”
McKnight joins the Gator staff after spending the past two seasons as Georgia Tech’s wide receivers coach. He and Faulker will be coaching some familiar faces, as Yellow Jackets QB Aaron Philo and WR Bailey Stockton have announced transfer commitments to Florida.
“My family and I are extremely grateful to Coach Sumrall for the opportunity to join his staff at the University of Florida,” McKnight said via UF. “I have a ton of respect for him as a leader and watching how his teams compete and play the game the right way. I am excited about the opportunity to work with some of the best coaches and players in the country at a place where we can compete for a national championship!”
Under Billy Napier, Billy Gonzales was the wide receivers coach the past 3 seasons. Sumrall has named an inside wide receivers coach and outside wide receivers coach to his staff. Marcus Davis, previously at Auburn has been named outside wide receivers coach.
