The Virginia Tech Hokies opened the new year with a resounding sweep over Queens on Friday at home, topping the women’s meet by a score of 159-105, and claiming victory on the men’s side by a final tally of 147-110.

WOMEN’S RECAP

The Virginia Tech women were paced by a trio of swimmers who won two individual events, with Carmen Weiler Sastre leading the charge.

Weiler Sastre was dominant with wins in the women’s 100 back (52.21) and 200 back (1:54.38), and she added a season-best of 51.88 in the 100 back leading off the Hokies’ 400 medley relay.

The senior, who placed 5th in the 200 back and 8th in the 100 back at the 2025 NCAAs, currently ranks 23rd in the country in the 200 back with her season-best of 1:53.05 from the NC State Invitational, while her 51.88 lead-off swim against Queens moves her to 30th this season in the 100 back.

In the 400 medley relay to open the meet, Weiler Sastre was followed by Emily Santos (1:00.91), Athena Meneses Kovacs (53.53) and Emily Claesson (48.62) as Virginia Tech won the race comfortably in 3:34.94, while their ‘B’ squad placed 2nd in 3:39.81 ahead of Queens (3:42.56).

Santos and Claesson were the other two Hokies to win two individual events.

Santos, a Panamanian sophomore, won the 100 breast (1:02.11) and 200 breast (2:15.51), with her season-bests standing at 1:00.72 and 2:14.25, respectively.

Claesson, a senior, came out on top in the 50 free (22.85) and 100 free (49.39), coming off hitting respective season-bests of 22.47 and 48.45 at the NC State Invitational in November.

The top point scorer for Queens was German freshman Leonie Tenzer, who won the 500 free (4:51.48) and 1000 free (9:59.65) while adding a 6th-place finish in the 200 free (1:52.01).

The 200 free was claimed by VT’s Chiara Klein, who touched in 1:48.21 to go 1-2 with teammate Kate Anderson (1:49.98).

Also putting up big points for Queens was junior Abigail Zboran, who won the 200 IM (2:04.54), took 2nd to teammate Maddie Foster (54.37) in the 100 fly (55.01), and was 3rd in the 200 fly (2:00.53).

Topping the 200 fly was Virginia Tech’s Julia Murphy, who set a lifetime best of 1:59.71 to edge out teammate Amanda Barnard (1:59.89).

In the meet-ending 200 free relay, Virginia Tech’s quartet of Weiler Sastre (22.79), Claesson (22.56), Fanni Gyurinovics (23.14) and Murphy (22.79) clocked 1:31.28 for the top time, though Queens’ time of 1:32.38 earned the official win due to VT being scored as exhibition.

MEN’S RECAP

The Virginia Tech men were powered by junior Brendan Whitfield, who swept the 50, 100 and 200 free.

Whitfield led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Hokies in the 50 free in 19.47, won the 100 free by over a second in 42.92, and dominated the 200 free by nearly four seconds in 1:34.85.

Whitfield is coming off setting season-bests of 18.94, 41.62 and 1:33.27 in the 50, 100 and 200 free at the NC State Invitational in November, and then in early December, he set respective long course bests of 22.01, 48.44 and 1:50.08 at the U.S. Open.

Also winning multiple individual events for Virginia Tech was sophomore Eli Martin, who claimed the 100 breast (53.59) and 200 breast (1:57.38), with the former coming within seven-tenths of the best time he set in November at the NC State Invitational (52.90). He also set a 200 breast best time at that meet, clocking 1:52.53 to book the victory.

Martin also had a key leg for the Hokies in the 400 medley relay, as Andy Roose (47.32), Martin (52.24), Will Hayon (46.09) and Tanish George Mathew (43.77) combined to clock 3:09.42 and win the event, with the Virginia Tech ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams placing 2nd and 3rd as they swept the podium.

Roose, whose lead-off time was a new 100 back PB, added an individual victory in the 200 back, clocking 1:43.31 to narrowly miss his season-best of 1:43.05.

Leading the way for Queens was Brazilian sophomore Matheus Przewalla, who placed 2nd in the 200 breast (1:59.56) and 3rd in the 100 breast (54.72) while adding the official win in the 200 IM (1:48.49), though VT’s Clem Camacho posted the fastest time (1:47.12) but was scored as exhibition.

Virginia Tech posted the fastest time in every other individual event, though Queens did claim the 200 free relay to close things out after the Hokies were disqualified. The Royals’ quartet of Nien Levy (20.25), Stamatis Paleocrassas (19.73), Jackson Vineyard (19.96) and Carl Bartone (20.17) clocked 1:20.11, while Virginia Tech’s ‘B’ team was close behind in 1:21.38 (scored as exhibition).

Queens also earned official wins in the 500 free and 100 fly due to Virginia Tech being scored as exhibition after the meet was locked in favor of the Hokies.

VT’s Jakub Poliacik (4:25.05) and Lee Naber (4:28.07) were the two fastest swimmers in the 500 free, though Queens’ Stefan Steyn claimed the official win in 4:34.42.

Naber also won the 1000 free early in the meet in a time of 9:09.59, narrowly missing his season-best of 9:09.42 set in October.

In the 100 fly, VT senior Hayon posted the top time in 46.84, while Queens’ Emil Harlem (47.55) earned the official win.

Also winning for the Hokies was Levente Balogh in the 100 back, clocking 47.55 to edge out Roose (47.92), and Carl Bloebaum in the 200 fly, touching in 1:47.35 to take down Queens’ Nikola Karaivanov (1:48.14), who set a new season-best.
