The fire was initially reported as a "rubbish fire," the statement indicated. Located on the 6700 block of Sunset Boulevard, the fire escalated quickly. Despite fighting the blaze for over an hour, firefighters were unable to save the building.
In total, 70 firefighters from multiple companies worked to extinguish the fire.
A walkthrough of the property after the fire, done by Kim Cooper of the Esotouric tour company and posted on Instagram, revealed that the property's iconic pool survived the fire. Most of the bungalows, which were added to the property years after it was initially built, survived the blaze, as well.
"It's a gut punch for Hollywood preservation," noted Brian Curran, a local historian. He added, "The real tragedy is that this building had been left vacant and it no longer had any kind of purpose, so it became a magnet for transients."
The Facebook page Merch Motel shared photos of the Hollywood Center Motel from earlier days and wrote that it was "Another irreplaceable piece of Los Angeles history destroyed."
"This was one of the coolest sites to see in Hollywood. It was a look into the past and it's surrounded by new development and constant change," the caption continued.
