Former Littleton bus aide seen punching nonverbal student on video pleads guilty ...Middle East

News by : (Colorado Sun) -

A former Littleton bus aide who was captured on video punching a nonverbal student strapped into a harness pleaded guilty Monday to several felony charges.

Kiarra Jones, 30, pleaded to 10 counts of third-degree assault against an at-risk person, all felonies, and two counts of child abuse, both misdemeanors, according to documents filed in the 18th Judicial District Court.

Jones was arrested in April 2024 after a 10-year-old boy’s parents reported bruises on his foot and a police officer reviewed footage from an on-bus camera showing Jones assaulting children on three separate bus rides to and from The Joshua School in Englewood, a school for kids ages 3 through 21 with developmental disabilities. She is set to be sentenced March 18. Each felony count carries a maximum of 18 months in prison and a fine up to $100,000, court documents show. Each child abuse count carries a penalty of up to 364 days in jail and a maximum $1,000 fine.

Parents of the three students, who rely on caretakers to provide for their basic needs, said their children began to show unexplained behavioral changes and injuries, including a fractured bone, limping, a lost tooth, a black eye and unexplained scratches, according to attorneys Rathod Mohamedbhai LLC.

Their families said their autistic children were abused for months by the aide and were unable to communicate anything was wrong.

“While we are grateful that Jones pled guilty and admitted to causing our son’s injury, our son will deal with the impacts of her abuse for the rest of her life,” Kevin and Brittany Yarbrough, parents of one of the students, said in a statement Monday. “The guilty plea is the next step in the process, however the fight is not over. It is our mission to hold the people that allowed Jones’ abuse to continue for so long responsible.”

A message left for Jones’ public defender was not immediately returned.

Jones was hired by Littleton Public Schools in August 2023 after “satisfactory reference checks” and a thorough background check, Todd Lambert, superintendent of the district, said in an email sent to families last year.

Jones had “limited access to students during her employment” and was fired last March, on the same day a parent reported injuries to their child after being brought home from The Joshua School, Lambert said.

Jones was released from the Arapahoe County jail in April, after posting a $5,000 bond.
